May 16, 200521 yr Govt pledges to develop Northeast BURIRAM: -- Government ministers today delivered goods to local residents in Thailand's northeastern province of Buriram, where the cabinet of the new Thaksin administration will hold its first 'roving meeting' tomorrow, with pledges to assist the people of Baan Mai Chaiphot district. Gen.Thammarak Isarangura Na Ayutthaya, the Defence Minister and head of the ruling Thai Rak Thai (TRT) Party’s north-eastern division, told reporters after meeting residents of the village that their concerns would be put before the cabinet meeting at Khao Phnom Rung tomorrow. Expressing confidence that the plans were feasible and would be relatively cheap to implement, he then immediately seized on the public relations opportunity provided by the occasion and thanked the village residents for choosing the TRT Party in the last general election in February. “The main principle factors relating to poverty in the Northeast are water, forest land and roads. If we can solve these problems, we can solve the problem of poverty”, he said. While admitting that Baan Mai Chaiphot district could not be counted as poverty-stricken, he, nonetheless, promised that the government would help raise the quality of life for the people living there. --TNA 2005-05-16
May 23, 200521 yr Hasn't every Thai government made this same pledge regarding how they are going to work miracles in the Northeast?
May 25, 200521 yr Given that economic inequality and lack of opportunity has lead many an Isaan woman into prostitution. It may be helpful to place a tax on all of Thailands prostitutes which could be put back into Isaan (and other areas) to develop infrastructure and creat employment opportunities. In simialr fashion the the hotel 'bed tax', we could call it a 'head tax' !
