Survey Results Are In

Featured Replies

I’ve been recording audio randomly off the net, and then trying to figure out what was said. This little bit is about the results of a survey and 40% of the people bawk wah. 2 items in response, I think. What does “ever play look people mat” mean?

The other item I think means ever bribed someone just for doing ordinary business. Who is Joe T. Rat?

I thought maybe jao tee rat or chaw tee rat but it doesn’t sound right.

Joe T. Rat

I have the audio, TIA for any answers.

Not so easy to catch, but it's เลี้ยงดูปูเสื่อ (an elegant expression). See how you go finding info about this on the net.

OK thanks, I think I got.

[to] entertain warmly

My research would indicate it means to entertain a guest by providing food and drink etc. Take care of person on mat.

So it would all be one item in the survey reply. The person on the mat is (Joe T. Rat?) who is being entertained or taken care of by bribery.

sorry, should have addressed the other part as well:

feel free to ask if there are any further questions.

Just a tiny correction

Just as an aside, Lexitron seems to unlock the mystery of why "ปูเสื่อ" is part of the equation:

"เลี้ยงดูปูเสื่อ [V] entertain warmly; entertain with food and women"

Thanks for the typo, anchan.

David, I'm not sure but you seem to be suggesting that ปูเสื่อ is linked to women. In any case, let me just point out that ปูเสื่อ means "to lay out a mat" and that bamboo mats (for sitting on) are tied with receiving guests and sitting down together.

We came across the ubiquitous เสื่อ previously with the saying รับหน้าเสื่อ. I can also think of I wonder how many other sayings/idioms involve เสื่อ?

Agree, to extend it to women is a bit too far for normal usage. It probably refers to the old style meal where every one sit together and eat on a mat.

Another saying that pop out of my head is เสื่อผืนหมอนใบ referring to Chinese immigrant who come to Thailand with only a mat and a pillow.

There's also ล้มหมอนนอนเสื่อ (to be bedridden, to fall ill)
