Anyone know where to buy in Phuket. I've never tasted it and would love to get some to see if it is as good as Marmite. Thanks.

villa mart in chalong sells both...having grown up in n.america with no preference either way- i am a vegemite fan myself (it's in the texture). ;-)

Marmite barrel scrapings (vegamite) can be found in FarangMart I think..

I never went out of my way to try Vegimite because I always thought it was an identical product, with a different name. Obviously not. I will have to give it a go now. (un biasdly of course)

I don't think the words Marmite sandwich have ever been used in a cool song though, so vegimite wins that one.

What about Bovril!! What the crap is that stuff all about?

Vegimite has a much more "Yeasty " taste tham Marmite .I work about 4 km from where it is manfactured in Sydney and on some days it can be smelt in the air and it has a definate "beer aroma" as it is being brewed up( from the yeast).

The new Vegimite with cheese may appeal to some but i have never been a fan of cheap and sweet cheese so you may try and like that. It would be the vegemite (if any) that would appeal to the Thai or American (read MacDonalds) palate.

Actually I love Promite best of all - another flavour again .

I tried one after the other once. Definitely not the same but very similar. Marmite had a rounder taste, and vegemite a bit more intense. My Thai gf liked vegemite when I gave her some.

Its down to a matter of taste which is the best, Marmite or Vegimite,I personally like them both.

Both are rich in Folic acid,Marmite came out just before the 1914- 1918 war and was part of the troops rations due

to its condensed nature,while Vegemite saw the light of day in 1922.

The new(ish) Deli at the north end of Ratuthit in Patong stocks Vegemite (at a ridiculously exorbitant price). They used to stock it at Big C for a more reasonable price, but last time I was there I couldn't find it. If you are in Patong and want to sample it, David always serves it (free) when he runs one of his regular free barbecues at his Booty Bar at the OTOP market.

My impression is vegamite has less 'tang' and intensity than marmite, perhaps less salty ???

Where can this promite be found ??

I haven't looked for Promite in Thailand but it is available in Singapore. It is made by Masterfoods.

My m8 bought a small jar at Villy Market in Pataya for $6 au, then dropped it when he unpacked his shopping. lol

dont complain about expensive. here in Bali, we pay around AUD25 for a jar that costs AUD5 'back home'.

Yes ridiculous price. Supply and demand, I suppose. (Congrats on green - very elder statesmanish. :) )

I love Vegemite on fresh hot buttered bread. Im also like a large spoon of it in a mug of boiling water with a dash of worstershire sauce and a sprinkle of pepper, just like Bonox but better. :)

You can buy Vegemite and Marmite at Farangmart in Patong. Also in stock Colemans Mustard, Branston Pickles and Gravox.

Fresh bread everyday at Farangmart.

So does that mean Bonox is the OZ version of Bovril then? I think that's what people do with Bovril, make a hot drink with it.

Slightly off topic, but my granny used to eat dripping on toast, which as far as I remember was nothing but the congealed fat from the frying pan!! :) Please tell me people don't still do that.

Bovril is beef extract, they say its ok for Vegetarians, how I dont know. Tastes graet by the way

Not true. People still use dripping in lots of ways for cooking, and lots of people, especially in the North of England still spread it on toast.

Between 2004 and 2006 Bovril removed the beef from its products.

I certainly wouldn't recommend it to a Hindu now...

Not true. People still use dripping in lots of ways for cooking, and lots of people, especially in the North of England still spread it on toast.

OK, change that to people who lived through the 40s-50s rationing and people who live in the less civilised parts of the UK.

The "if any" part makes this a very accurate statement. IMHO you have to be brought up on the stuff to appreciate it. :)
