State schools in 8 provinces postpone application period

BANGKOK: --Out of concern about the huge redshirt rally, all state secondary schools in eight provinces will postpone the application period that was initially scheduled to run from tomorrow to next Wednesday.

"We made the decision after it became clear the redshirt demonstrators will head to Bangkok and will likely prolong their rally," Education Minister Chinnaworn Boonyakiat said yesterday.

He said it was not yet decided when children should submit applications to state secondary schools in Bangkok, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon, Nonthaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Ayutthaya and Chachoengsao.

These eight provinces are now under the Internal Security Act, which has been invoked to deal with the redshirt rally.

"Twelve schools in inner Bangkok have also now cancelled their plans to receive applications online or by mail," Chinnaworn said.
