chadillac0
I have a feeling that this whole thing will come to a head very quickly, because even though most of the red shirt demonstrators are probably nice people, there are also some very violent instigators among their midst, who will show their true ambitions soon. Let's not forget, too, that Thaksin last year, called for a Revolution. Peaceful protest my A**, they are just using that cover to get into the city. As soon as they see their chance, they will urge their followers to physically overpower the current Government. Is there any reader here, who truly thinks otherwise? My thought exactly!! The media has been billing this like some kind of PPV event. I'm sure there are more than a few young males that came for "the fight" and it's not going to take much, and empty bottle thrown, a fire lit, some fool is going to set it off....The reaction will depend on the leadership of both sides, but A non-violent" protest is far from likely. This whole ting is a joke, and to be honest, I too hope it kicks off so all these empty threats by BOTh sides can be seen fror what they are.....BULLSH*T... The reds need to get some credibility back and unfortunately, they know the only way to put their stamp on this is by kicking some A**. Let's hope nobody "innocent" gets hurt and the reds play it smart.
chadillac0
Only an opinion, but in response to why up and coming students aren't rising up would be 2 fold; They due to censorship are not educated on the level of the rest of the world's students. 2nd they probably have been taught to fear possible outcomes.....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/6_October_1976_Massacre Only my experience, but most students and university faculty I know (again just my experience, maybe because people with like views are drawn together) oppose the redshirts and Thaksin, many actively support the yellowshirts. This is the same "response" I get from said people when the subject arises. Get those same people out of a group setting and ask them one on one....I bet you get a different opinion. I think the main "issue" with the students is the parents push their beliefs and because of the strong family structure, they believe what they're fed like good boys and girls. Let's be honest, Thai students have a hard enough time finishing a homework assignment, let alone thinking for themselves about social change. kurtgruen
Actually, I am quite Red myself, just not "Thai Red" More Cuban Red or Che Red. I'm actually quite offended, that a ruthless capitalist, such as Thaksin would hijack the red colour. And yes, I am proud of the red part, of our Canadian flag...it represents the few isolated socialists left, tucked away in British Columbia Kurt pleased to meet you. If they were genuinely socialist I would be more sympathetic, though I might not agree with their approach. I think you are right about their motives. Have you checked out Red Star House at JJ Market and the Che Store at JJ Mall? No, but I do business at JJ Market frequently. Have to check them out, thanks

bacchanal
if you do not take us voluntarily will will seize your boatsthe red shirts schoolboy bully version of democracy in action More like enforcing their equal rights as citizens to use public transportation. You might have missed the other portion of the article. However their request that the red shirts allow other passengers to get on the boats was rejected. So much for "equal rights" of ALL passengers. Gotta be red to be equal, eh?

Hairy
demand that the authority let them pass otherwise the pier seizure? come on mate, that isn't a democracy, sounds to me like they are the bloody dictatorship themselves. And they called themselves fighting against dictatorship? Scr*w them. This is normal behavior from mobs, No Matter Which Color, I seem to remember the Yellow Shirts doing the same, with buses in the city and access to the motor highway to airport. At the end of the day, it is what one can expect from any mob rule, period. Seems people have forgotten about a certain airport seizure, and stranding vacationers in Thailand for weeks. Oh, oops, that was ok, since that wasn't the Reds. My bad.

The airport takeover was deplorable, but at least get the facts right.
Ulysses G.
To be accurate, the airport may have been shut for 9 days, but it took weeks for some tourists to get flights home and thousands more cancelled vacations to Thailand completely. Those misguided protests were at the beginning of the tourist High Season and had a dramatically negative effect on the Thai economy! Edited March 15, 2010 by Ulysses G. Not to mention the damage to the place and the irreversable damage to Thailands reputation.....in business this is yet to be measured
rfukata
nothing compared to the take over of both 'international airports' by the PAD organization. this is chump change and shouldn't even be a discussion piece.
thepodest
A lot of people here cite Yellow shirts' actions to justify the Red shirts' actions. If Yellow did do wrong then why must Red gets to do the same? Shouldn't the Red shirt be setting an example?
Ulysses G.
A lot of yellow farangs accuse the reds of all sorts of things that the yellows have also done and then act if the reds are the only ones that can be evil. The truth is that everyone is looking out for their own interests. The point is that both sides are doing some pretty screwed up things and that there are no real good guys. Compromising is the only fair way to solve the problem. Singling out the reds as the “bad guys” is just plain silly.
