How To Send Money Back To The Uk

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I know this is a reverse of the usual question so wondering if anyone can help me.

I had a bit of a rough patch a couple of months back and borrowed 400 GBP from my friend in the UK which I then took out at an ATM here in Bangkok.

I need to pay him back 100 GBP a month starting at the end of this month. I have a Kasikorn Bank account here with a Visa card I can use online if that helps and I believe he uses Barclays in the UK.

I am pretty sure Paypal is the easiest option but he doesn't use it and I know Western Union would work but is really expensive. Any other suggestions would be welcomed.

Thanks

money gram .

almost the same as western union but cheaper and often found in banks and travel agencies everwhere

try them .

Ask a Thai Friend of you to use his/her account.

I know you said that your friend doesn't have a paypal account but it is very easy to create one.

Buy a £100 cashiers cheque from Bangkok Bank, drawn on their London branch (bigger branches of BB) - the cost of buying this is excellent since it's the same as the wire transfer/TT rates of exchange. Mail the cheque to him using EMS (recorded delivery from the Post Office, costs about 60 baht or so) and when he gets the cheque he can deposit it into his account (or cash it at BB UK) and it will clear in three working days in the UK.

For small amounts like this buy some pounds at a local money changer and mail it EMS / Recorded.

Lots of them have regulations against sending cash but if you don't tell them then they won't know.

NEVER send cash via any mail postal system.

Why not ? People send cash all the time and it can be insured against loss.

You might note that Thailand isn't on the list of countries you can't send insured cash to, sending from here back to the UK will probably be a little different but I don't think you will have a problem. Lots of people are very paranoid about lots of things.

For the cheapest way possible, what about the post office self-cheque.

In Japan, the cheapest and probably slowest method was to have the post office send a cheque in your name to anyone but yourself.

The rate offered was virtually identical to the commercial buy rate and there was no extra charge.

Is that possible here?

The Thai post office have a sign on the wall telling people never to send cash through the postal system. I assume that this serves as a disclaimer as well.

Borrow a friends account. (try and borrow their money too!)

alternatively, send cash, cunningly disguised as something less attractive like divorce papers or something.

ALternatively, give the money to someone you know who is going to England. Lots of thai girls going to see their boyfriend/sponser in blighty would be happy to carry it for you. be sure to write the address clearly and give them good directions, or money for a postage stamp in England.

Foolproof!

Collect all the details of his account, set up your Kasikorn internet banking then add his account for international transfer, will take a few days but once sorted an online transfer is both quick and cheap, I flick 20,000bht a month into my Oz account from my Kasikorn account, its takes about 3 hrs to show up in the Oz account and costs me $10.00.

hi

i send money every month to my folks to pay for old debts, i have an extra atm card to my current account and i tell them how much an when to take it out, with internet banking i can see the rates and the charges.

now with you i would open an extra account with some money in just for ur friends amd send them a card for that account.when they have been completely paid you close the account

its so simple quick an easy with good rates too.

hope my post is understandable....

You must know somebody here in LOS that still has a current UK account??, which they can use online, just offer them a favourable exchange rate, job done

Also my thai account here lets me do international transfers via internet banking, and as you are talking small amounts it should not be a problem
