It is easy to critisise - But what about all the street crimes in the UK - How many ever get to court and if they do what happens / - but the police in thailand and here are ........./ I think Samui has more positives than negatives and the New Major and Tesse Bahn are doing a good job IMO /

"Samui generally has a very low level of crime compared to many places" :):D:D For the island the size of the Isle of Whight, this is murder capitol, plus one death a day on the roads. You're having a laugh. You really ought to get out more.... but not too far away from your gated compound. An awful lot of drunken Thai men carry unlicensed guns :D

Please tell us how and where to you find the statistics that Samui is " Murder Capitol "

so samui has over taken afganistaan. Jamacia Joe burg. Iraq. Maybe i should go to Iraq next year on holiday have a brake from murder lol

I've never heard of a burglers ever being caught or of follow up investigations Churchill and i know many people that have had their homes broken into. Where do you get your statistics mate? Having read your posts on this thread i really can't see any improvements forthcoming. Please take your head out of the sand :)

I can only give you my own experience /

Whilst in London , I was mugged once and burgled 3 times , I had alarms , motion sentisitive lights and everyone was on neighbourhood watch / Was the victim of Road rage twice / Nobody was ever caught even though the area I was living , Islington , had a crime wave and the burglers moved from street to street /

Since living in Samui I have never had a problem / In lamai for some time , doors, windows often left open / and where i live now the same / Saw plenty of alchohol related crime in Lamai but more so in London /

But I have never known so many people have motorbike accidents and this is one of Samui's major problems /

But in the UK you cannot pay to get out of it. Do the crime do the bird time. No excuses.

in the uk u can get out. not with money with informations. uk like a grass. i prefer thailand. example if someone shot my brother. they catch the man he gets life. What about my life. i am still going to be skint i still have no brother and the only peace i get is that the man is locked up and will get out 1 day. from a clever point of view i would rarther accept money of a few million baht maybe more because i am forang. forang prices sometimes work for us. the criminal become skint i get money. i still feel bad but i am richer and i feel bad rarther than poor.

just my take. it makes common sense to me. better to take a criminals money than lock them for life. let them have no money and no power nearly the same as being banged up. on the other hand if the person has no money then he should have thought o that before he done the crime. or maybe i have been here too long .)

So you are saying all rich criminals can become killers, just pay up. The more cash you have HIDDEN away the more adversaries you can eliminate and and still enjoy freedom, sounds a bit daft to me. As for staying out of clink in the UK with information, l think murderers would get very little time off for information. :)

Yes. If you have a million Baht ( and good connections on the island) you can just about get away with anything. Except killing the BIB. I personally know of a Thai who shot and killed another Thai in Green Mango and was released within 2 days. 5 weeks later, he shot a cop in Sound Bar and couldn't buy himself out of that and they put him away.

The

Statistics

Thailand ranks low for most reported crimes when compared with Western countries- with one big exception. Thailand is near the top of any list of countries for murder with firearms.Gun crime is most often related to gang wars. There is a serious problem of organised drug crime in the border areas with Burma, Cambodia and Laos. Guns are also often used to settle business disputes and jealous lovers- both men and women- use guns to settle scores depressingly often.A few foreigners each year are caught in the cross fire. An unknown number of foreigners (a few dozen, maybe) are murdered deliberately mainly as a result of business disputes but sometimes by jealous or abandoned lovers. There are occasional reports of foreign men being murdered by their Thai wives for money or property. :)

It's interesting that you use the words "reported crimes", the 'bought off' crimes go unreported, therefore do not enter the statistics.

in 2006 thailand was ranked 14 in murder capitals. then 15 zimbarbway

1 million baht for a thai maybe. not for a forang. if a forang shot someone. maybe 10 or 12 million. possibley more

as for the man critizing me. i am intittled to me view. if u don't like it it is up 2 you. maybe i have been here too long but for me having someone locked up for a 25 years to life or the death penalty is just a waste of my time and money. I just adapt the world i live in. chances are the killer will get out after a few years. which mean i would be no more better off. if the killer has big connections then i would like a taste of his cash. or the other choice is pay money to have them stay in jail.

i would also be happy with the knoledge that what goes around comes around and should the killer get into a nasty accident. due to bad karma. being a buddist. then i would not feel bad or any need to worry :) Khrap Pomme

I just got an update on the lady who is an English teacher and was raped a couple of months ago. The Thai is still in prison. His family has offered 2 million baht as compensation, which she has refused and insists the case go to court. The local BIB "lost" the DNA evidence. When confronted by the Bangkok authorities and the Lab there, they found it again and it is now being analysed again in BKK so the eveidence will be solid. With any luck this scum will get what he deserves and not get off because he has a rich family here on Samui!!! :)
