I bought a round trip ticket to Chiang Mai over a month ago. Since then I've been reading about the political unrest in Thailand. I'm a retired veteran and spent enough time in Vietnam to have become paranoid about my security. I'm ashamed to say my concern verges on fear no matter the reassurances that nothing is happening in Northern Chiang Mai.

I called my ticket agent, Theresa, at Emerson Travel, here in Hawaii to cancel the trip and she replied that China Airlines will be withholding $200 from my airfare; she didn't seem to want to question them on their policy for me.

Anyone know someone at China Airlines that might help? It seems as though such unrest warrants caution and concern and therefore refund consideration.

With aloha,

Kerry

I think your mistake was canceling, china is very liberal if you had rescheduled, but a flat cancellation due to your own unfounded fears sounds to them as a unjustified excuse.

Hey Kerry, in general when political upheavals happen and some countries issue travel warnings, most airlines will wear a cancellation for free.

It is up to your agent to get the correct information for you, and be aware, your "friendly agent" is never a friend. Often they inflate cancellation fees to make extra for themselves or their agency.

China Airlines are no better or worse than most international airlines, so if you prevail, they may very well cancel for free, or at least less than $200! Good luck. :)

I would cancel on health grounds.

It's the stupid burning season, thousands of fires all over.

Happens every year. :)

CM is acrid with smoke.

Not good planning on your part, mate.

Friends at CA, sorry, no.

Why not check their cancellation policy.

I do think you were somewhat rash cancelling for the reason you did.

A bit of probing on TV would have put your mind at rest and saved you $200.
