Thailand’s exports expected to be unaffected by political rallies

BANGKOK (TNA) -- Thailand’s exports are expected to experience no impact from ongoing political conflicts given the growth of up to 23.1 per cent in February, according to the Export Promotion Department (DEP) deputy director-general Malee Choklumlert.

She believed that March exports will reach Bt14 billion in value as targeted, boosted by the global economic recovery, a greater demand for products by trading partners for stock, and improved recognition of Thai products in the world market.

Although the political standoff is appearing to persist, she said, exports are unlikely to be affected since most trading partners had made purchase orders and transactions by e-commerce or email. They need not travel into Thailand.

Consquently she is confident that exports this year would grow up to 14 per cent, as earlier projected, if the political tension eased.

Mrs Malee said the Product Value Promotion Office planned to hold the 3rd Design Excellence Award (DEmark) Contest this year after the event successfully drew 98 export companies to present 176 design items for the competition last year.

She hoped the event would encourage the design of Thai products to differentiate themselves and create the added value so that they are recognised and competitive in the global market.

More importantly, it would help boost confidence among Thais in Thaiproducts under the certified mark of the DEmark, she said.

The Office of Product Value Development of the Department of Export Promotion established the DEmark in 2008, in order to highlight outstanding Thai products. (TNA)
