Smoking doubles among young women

CHIANG MAI: -- The number of young women smoking cigarettes has more than doubled in Thailand's northern province of Chiang Mai, the province’s deputy chief public health official, Dr. Surasing Wisarutrat, revealed today.

The announcement comes just days after the introduction of legislation requiring all cigarette packages to display graphic images of the physical damage caused by smoking, and reports that cigarette vendors in Chiang Mai are papering over the images in an attempt to boost sales.

Dr. Surasing said while the overall rate of cigarette consumption is on the wane, fatality rates from smoking-related diseases remain high.

In 2003, 73.95 people per 100,000 population died of heart disease in the province, while 24.1 per 100,000 population died of lung cancer.

What Dr. Surasing expressed particular concern over, however, was a rise in the number of young people taking up cigarette consumption, with the number of young female smokers more than doubling since 2003.

Describing the statistics as ‘frightening’, he said that campaigns would focus on schools and homes in an attempt to stop young people taking up the habit.
