BANGKOK: -- Jatuporn Promphan Thursday warned the Chulalongkorn University against allowing its academics to come out to organize campaigns against the red-shirt movement.

Warning not to speak against them???? Not so democratic in my view, but they also want others' sympathy towards their movement for democracy! Indeed a hypocrite in full force, I say!

City Residents Hold Gathering to Oppose House Dissolution

BANGKOK: -- Bangkok residents are gathering at Chulalongkorn University today at 2PM to show opposition towards a House dissolution.

They will also wear pink to show their displeasure towards the red shirt movement.

http://www.khonthaihuajaipakdee.com

i thought the pink shirts or the concept and idea behind is something to show love and positive emotions. IMHO, it should not be used in a counter-action against the red shirts.

All the other colours have been taken.

it isn't just an issue that there aren't any colours left to chose. that colour represent point one in the constitution.

and it is used in a government propaganda campaign. or should i say a democrats propaganda campaign.

protests against Abhisit aren't protests against that point one.

a political team that currently run a government should not declare its political opponents to enemies of the state.

i am waiting for a 'come as you are' movement. pluralism, a unity in diversity.

Red Democracy only means "Reds have the right to rule and anyone that says otherwise is evil." You want to protest against us? No! Express your opinion that is at odds with what Thaksin wants? No! Tell the truth about Arisman and Sae Daeng? No!

coincendentally, your namesake city is, as well

Show of Opposition Against House Dissolution Nationwide

People throughout the country have begun to organise activities to show their opposition to the red-shirts' demand for House dissolution.

A people's network in Maha Sarakham province has announced their support for negotiations as a way to solve the ongoing political conflict.

The group claims everyone must be involved in the negotiation process, and a dissolution of the Lower House or charter amendment is not the answer to the political crisis.

They have also made a demand for authorities to legally prosecute those who have broken the laws.

Meanwhile, in Phuket, approximately 200 residents have gathered in front of the provincial town hall to show their opposition to House dissolution.

They claim dissolution of the House is not the way to solve the problem, and they too demand that authorities prosecute those who have broken the laws.

They urge the red-shirts to conduct their rally peacefully and not to violate others' rights. Their announcement has also been submitted to the government through the provincial governor.

The group lit white candles to promote peace and sang the royal anthem before ending the gathering.

Oh so now he is warning Universities not to dispute his ideas.

What a arrogant prat.

Jatuporn has a long history of interfering with universities, including a very public screaming down of students who refused to take TRT bribes

Ramkamhaeng U students asks TRT to stop interfering

Thai Rak Thai Party Deputy Spokesman Jatuporn Promphan reacted angrily on Wednesday after a group of Ramkhamhaeng University students visited the party headquarters and demanded he stop intervening in the university's activities.

Some 20 students lead by student organisation chairman Somchote Meechana yesterday submitted a letter to the Thai Rak Thai caretaker leader Chaturon Chaisang, asking the party to stop interfering with the students.

But Jatuporn received the letter himself.

The students also brought a banner that read "We demand political groups to stop interfering with the student's organisation".

Thai 'Red Shirts' dismiss pleas to end protests

by Anusak Konglang

BANGKOK (AFP) -- Thailand's "Red Shirt" protesters remained defiant Thursday in the face of mounting pressure from the battered tourism industry to end mass demonstrations seeking to topple the government.

The Red Shirts have vowed to stage their biggest rally on Saturday since their latest round of protests began with more than 100,000 supporters on March 14, but the army has predicted a low turnout as rural demonstrators go home.

Tourist industry workers plan their own peaceful rallies Friday which they expect to draw about 1,000 people seeking an end to the action by supporters of fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra seeking snap polls.

The demonstrations planned for Bangkok and other top tourist destinations including Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Phuket reflect deepening concern about the impact of political turmoil on the vital tourism sector.

"We don't want to create mob against mob, but we want the political sector to hear our voice," said Charoen Wangananont, president of Thai Travel Agent Association.

In another rally against the mass protests, faculty members of Chulalongkorn University plan to dress in pink and gather in a show of anti-violence, also on Friday.

The tourism industry has suffered billions of dollars of financial losses in the past few years because of political unrest and foreign visitor arrivals are down 20-30 percent from last year, according to sector officials.

"More than two million Thais work in the tourism industry including hotels, spas, car rental, restaurants," Charoen told AFP.

"In recent years these people, as well as the industry, have suffered greatly due to the actions of our own people."

But Red Shirt leader Jatuporn Prompan rejected the estimated financial losses as overexaggerated and rounded on the tourism chiefs, saying they were allied to the current government.

Jatuporn reiterated that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's offer to call elections by the end of the year, one year ahead of schedule, would not be enough to bring the Red Shirts back to the negotiating table.

The Reds have staged a series of dramatic stunts to press their demand in recent weeks, including throwing their own blood at Abhisit's offices.

They seek the return of the twice-elected populist Thaksin, a former telecoms tycoon, saying that the coup that ousted him in 2006 was illegal.

Asian tourists are particularly sensitive to security and many have cancelled trips for this month's famed Songkran water festival that usually attracts thousands of foreign visitors, Charoen said.

Thailand's reputation as the "Land of Smiles" has suffered a heavy blow since late 2008 when the rival Yellow Shirts blockaded Bangkok's two airports for nine days, stranding hordes of frustrated travellers.

While the latest Red Shirts demonstrations have been peaceful, a series of small explosions have hit politically significant sites and army buildings, injuring more than a dozen people.

The army predicted that fewer people would attend the planned rally by Red Shirts on Saturday compared with the past two weekends.

About 65,000 people joined a city parade on Saturday 20, while more than 80,000 turned out on Saturday 27 when protesters chased soldiers out from non-political buildings such as temples and a zoo.

"The government is not worried about the number of protesters," said army spokesman Sunsern Kaewkumnerd.

The military has mounted a massive security operation for the demonstrations, which began after a court ruling that seized 1.4 billion dollars of Thaksin's fortune.

The Red Shirts love the populist Thaksin and despise Abhisit, whom they accuse of being elitist and in the pocket of the country's powerful military establishment.

Thaksin lives abroad, mostly in Dubai, to avoid a jail term for graft.

PTP --- the party that is all in favor of Democracy and Education! (unless of course you are an academic or student that opposes them!)

The kind of party that only cares about themselves, i.e. their party members, and believes their minority party opinion and rule is the best for the country, doesn't allow opposition, .... hmmmm ... kind of like the communist party?

While some very outpoken Marxists like Giles U. have stood up on Red stages, the group itself isn't communist (at least as it stands with Thaksin as the leader), It is more authoritarian and less concerned with the real concerns of the people that a Communist party would be.

For "faculty members of Chulalongkorn University" read PAD. I was wondering how long it would be before they were outside protesting against the Reds.

No doubt - chafing at the bit to get involved. And where were they when the PAD was protesting?

Sad that you are not remarking on their democratic right to peacefully assemble and exercise their democratic right to free speech.

They WEREN'T issuing threats against Jatuporn if he spoke out against them. At least the ones that were PAD, which means also that not all faculty members of Chulalongkorn University are PAD as you erroneously posted.

Only ninety-nine per cent are.

In fact some people from Chula spoke out during the PAD rallies both for and against the PAD.

Then again I seem to remember you calling for insurrection etc in another thread, so ....

I think it is very simpled, they maybe agreed with the protesters that time. This time they don´t. You can run back to what the yellows did time and time again. Now we are taking about 2010 and what people feel about the red shirts. Bangkok have been quit for two weeks now and are starting to getting tired

dont get me wrong everyone can protest. but come one chula, you are all so dam_n yellow so wear your own collor.

dont wear pink, this is the current color to support the king in gaining his health, dont make it dirty with your hands.

And tourism executives where were you when the PAD blocked the airport? that was the action that caused all of the damage and my job and not this little protest in the city. So either speak up whenever there is a protest openly declare that you are a yellow shirt.

Cause when the reds get their way he yellows come back and where are you then? sitting stil at home or even protesting with them..

Again dont get me wrong I want this all to stop as i am loosing business, but i just think that these new pink shirts and tourism .... are way to biased and should show their real allegiance before stepping up. And dont come now that you want peace when last year you were screaming for the government to resign.

this is turning out to be such a mickey mouse country politics wise

One of the most outspoken voices agaainst the government is a professor at Chula. That academics tend to be for the PAD over the reds is just not accurate.

Did anyone read the Thai invitation to the counter protests? They said that you can wear pink (incidently this has long been the color of Chulalongkorn university and not some last minute choice of colors unlike what some posters here may think) or any color. You just have to show up and show unity against the red shirts.

You can see that Bangkok people are getting extremely fed up now with the red shirts.

I still have my pink Chula shirt and my nylon briefcase with the pink Chula logo on it from when I studied there. (The shirt is sadly too grubby to wear now! It was from the Chula/Thammasat game the year I attended Chula)

i know their collor is pink, but still they should not wear it, cause the people rootin for the kings health will have to change shirts again, and then what are they going to wear? nothing much left right.

p.s they cant wear the same as the royal family wont too, to distanciate them from these people

For those of you that are hollering the red "double-standards" line (That Abhisit quite appropriately pointed out was first used regarding the 2001 asset concealment case of Thaksin's), Can you please explain to me why you are crying about people exercising 2 of the pillars of democracy (the right ot peacefully assemble, and the right to free speech) and then tell us why it is inappropriate for people to do those things regardless of whether you agree with them or not?

Most of us that are either Anti-Red, Anti-Thaksin, or even Pro-Yellow have said that the peaceful assembly of the reds is in line with democracy even if what they are asking for is not! The people you are crying about aren't heading out to the airport, they aren't blocking traffic all over Bangkok, they are just expressing their opinions and you seem to wish to prevent that. Why?
