They can do that by getting into government, changing the laws, exonerating Thaksin and bringing him back.

The reds want government dissolution now, so that they can get into government and change the appropriate laws.

They also want to be in control of the upcoming army reshuffle so they can put Thaksin's people at the top. Then they have control over everything.

Laws are not retroactive , they dont apply retroactively meaning to felonies or crimes comitted before they were enacted . If Thaksin comes back he will have to serve 2 years in jail regardless of the governement in power . Unless he gets a pardon from HM .

That doesn't stop laws being enacted that enables Thaksin to not serve his jail time, or just having his sentence commuted for time spent in exile. Basically, the government in power can do what they want. There is always a way when large amounts of money are involved.

That would require a judiciary decision in which the governement has no say , or not supposed too . Provided Thailand has a proper system of check and balances .Remember even though the PPP was in power at the time , they got ousted . So not that simple .

As for buying judges agree with you but he could have done it from Dubai . And it would be found sooner or later , this case is too high profile , ppl would get suspicious

The unions have just publicly distanced themselves from the UDD movement (by a few hundred rai)...

On the basis that they are staunchly anti-Thaksin that is hardly a surprise.

It is one of the beautiful contradictions of Thailand that to be a unionised train driver or desk jockey for Thai Airways. is perceived as a position of privilege.

Does make you wonder why the bastions of sincerity that are the red shirts actually made the claim the unions would be supporting them this weekend?

Is there a daily "outrageous claim" quota they need to attain each day?

It is time to do something about these arrogant and stupid people that only have one goal. To bring a corrupt man back into power

i don't think it is just about Thaksin and not the goal of that movement. anyway, how they could do that - bring Thaksin back into power?

and have they ever announced that their goal is a law thaksin? can the government order how the courts should rule?

if they do that, Weng would be the first in line who starts to protest against them and boycott them.

Weng was a proto-PAD, but he left that movement as others started to ask the army for help. Weng is one of Thaksin earliest critics, war on drugs, emergency laws, bribing judges, dissapearing muslin lawyers. Weng made his public complains.

the Junta put him into jail, the same people he knew from 1992.

do make it clear to the army that they have to stop to interfere with politics - that is the most important point in the long run.

and yeah, sorry, dr. weng also demand that every pro-coup figure have to look for a new post. and he is right with that. a democracy don't need pro-coupler.

C'mon now, it is all about Taksin. The more they say it isn't, the more you have to wonder why no one mentions the turd on the banquet table. Without him this wouldn't be happening.

At week 2 of this folly, the reds presented their demands: amnesty for Taksin, expedited release of his assets, and 'a piece of ground for him to stand on.'

From a business perspective you can understand his motivation, as billions of dollars (for him and his) is at stake. Then again, if I had a net worth of US$1 billion I probably wouldn't be too worried about more, save sticking it to the SOBs who sequestered it.

From a megalomaniacs point of view, well, can't help you there, just that it seems those guys can't get enough.

As to the talks that ended this week, notice that it took a few days for the reds to say 'no more meetings.' Sounds like that one came down from the top, the face on the screen vetoed the negotiations.

From what I understand, the reds have said their goals are government dissolution, democracy for the people, and free and fair elections.

Their version of democracy: "It is our democratic right to protest". "If you protest, we will send our people to demonstrate against you".

Their version of free and fair elections: Paying people to vote for them, and sending thugs to anyone else campaigning in their areas.

The fact that Thaksin is funding their protest, and Thaksin is talking to them nearly every night (except when he's in Dubai), and the fact that most of the reds carry around Thaksin posters, and that even Thaksin needs to remind them that "It's not about me. It's about Thailand. It's about Democracy".

It's all about Thaksin. It's all about Thaksin's money.

Wow. Were you here in 2008? Did you visit Issan at all during that time? Even in Bangkok, the posters and pick-ups with loud speakers roaming the streets were all in support of former TRT. If the junta invested millions as you say, then Thaksin must have invested billions!

I am not into who's who and who is right or wrong but I know this in the last caouple of months I have heard news now and then about the protests in Bangkok, when the airport were occupied it were on the news here in Denmark almost daily and it had a much more negative impact than the current protests have. If you put last Aprils and the current negative press together it will not even get close to the negative press and impect it had when the airport were occupied.

You thin what you describe above is a valid measurement?

Suggest you do some more research about what's underneath this whole mess.

Well, considering how much money he took from the Thai people while he was PM, he only needs to use that money (out of his own pocket) until he is back in power. Then he can start using the people's money again.

But then of course, the udd/red shirt thaksin apologists, just to show they will never never accept any form of double standards, are campaining for a pardon for a cinvicted criminal who raped Thailand (all Thai people) for billions of Baht, tried to gain control of various ministries, massively abused his power and murdered 2,500 fellow Thais. No double standards whatever in that picture! (giggle giggle)

It's all about Thaksin. That can't be ignored. If a few people recognised that the protests are all about Thaksin, we could probably move on to some more constructive discussions.

If it wasn't about Thaksin, the reds would have dumped him ages ago, but they can't because to them, that is the only thing it is about.

[how they can get into the government?

and have they ever announced that their goal is a law thaksin? can the government order how the courts should rule?

Their strategy is very obvious:

- Try to bluster an immediate dissolution of government (Why immediate? Because they know that time will quickly and solidly dissipate their releveance and they will fade and be forgotten.)

- Buy as many votes as is needed (and they know how to do it) and probably quite openly and become a one party government.

- On day one as a government enact legislation (which could not be challenged because they have the numbers) pass various pieces of specific legislation to squash the paymasters conviction, and cancel all further charges against him. Serious lawyers will tell you that it would be unprecedented but possible. And they would absolutely not listen at all to any form of dissenting discussion from anybody and they would care how immoral their actions were. And very quickly pass legislation to get the 2006 conctitution restored or pass amendments to the current constitution which would amount to the same thing.

And do all of this very quickly before the electoral commission has had time to receive vote buying complaints etc., and if necesssary intimidate the election commission so that it becomes toothless.

On one specific point from the previous poster "have they ever announced that their goal is a law thaksin?.

No they haven't announced it with this specific nomenclature but they have said enough in various speeches, discussions, announcements thats it's very very easy to but it all into a picture and in fact it's not very complex.

Chalerm has said he will campaign in the next election on bringing Thaksin back. This a possible scenario.

1. Supposing Pheua Thai win the next election. A law is passed granting an amnesty to Thaksin on the grounds the coup was an illegal act and therefore the setting up of the AEC ( Assets Examination Committee) was illegal therefore its findings(although truthful) are invalid. Thaksin is exonerated of all charges.

2. Thaksin returns and an MP for Chiang Mai resigns, resulting in a by election. Thaksin wins the seat.

3. The puppet PM resigns and Thaksin is elected as PM.

This is the roadmap set out by Pheua Thai.

i guess we misunderstood each other. okay, not sure about the budget for campaigning just the few weeks before a election, but i mean the amount of money the government spend while in offfice. or during the junta, for counter intelligence against undercurrent movements or possible protests and so on. or just all that material in print and on TV to promote government programs.

i mean ads like this:

or the pm website: http://www.pm.go.th/ his public appearances, propaganda material, PR shows and so on. all that cost money and Abhisit is the biggest spender here ever. promting his chees in the hope he can get mire voters.

the other dude, i call him commie or troll because he comes up with a total absurd conspiracy theory. evil master mind Thaksin has to buy and payoff everyone to get elected in the first place and than does nothing else as stealing all the money from the country?

what kind of business plan is that? how one man can keep all this logistics and payouts running?

or is there still public support for Thaksin and people vote for him voluntary (but that can't be possible because thaksin is undemocratic evil). but wouldn't it make more sense for our dr. mabuse to hide silent in the background than posing in public at the leader position where everybody can see him?

and the commie paranoia is that he is stealing the 'peoples money'. because rich businessmen, capitalists allways steal from the poor.and evil capitalist take the biggest part from the cake for themself and give only little part of the cake for everybody else, right? that theory has a big flaw.

because there isn't such a cake of a fixed sizes. the cake get created by our businessman, its size grows with the businessman runs a sucessful strategy. the shares of the cake becomes for everybody heavier. and those who provide the wheat, sugar, butter and milk for the cake also have a bigger turnover. its a win-win situation. nobody lose something. okay, the share isn't equally distributed like a a commie would dream of, our bussinessman still takes the biggest part, but without him there wouldn't be any cake at all.

Thaksin was so-so stellar corrupt like everybody else and he did quite well in the milk, cookie and the cake business. during his time as PM, wasn't only his wealth growing but the wealth of a lot of others people too.

but thaksin isn't the boy who owns the football, the football belongs to the guy with the green shirt, he has a big ego too, want kick it like Thanom, but is too slow. so he takes the football away, decares i don't play with you never ever again anymore, teams up with his weaker cousin and waste money to stage a match demcracy thai style, with the emphasis on 'thai style' and that is the part tom, dick and harry will never undertand.

the rules everybody talking about are not based on fairness and sportmanship, but to obey and show respect to the guy who owns the foolball and never try to be smarter than him.

Verbal clash between red shirts, pink shirts occur at Lumpini Park

BANGKOK: -- Five companies of police were deployed to the Lumpini Park to prevent possible clashes between the red-shirt and pink-shirt people Friday afternoon.

The pink-shirt people, who are against the red-shirt movement's call for House dissolution, gathered at the park at 1 pm.

By 1:18 pm, red-shirt people vehicles drove past the park heading to the US embassy.

When two more groups of red-shirt people drove past the park, some pink-shirt people ran out to the road to boo the red-shirt people.

The pink-shirt people carried banners, saying "Please stop it! We want to live our normal life".

Both sides then shouted at each other and police had to calm them down.

-- The Nation 2010-04-02

I wonder if the red shirts will keep it peaceful if the peace protesters show up again tomorrow?

Quite an interesting day for the reds, march by Lumpini and trade insults with a small amount of the silent majority who are tired of being silent, move on to the US embassy to both criticize them for their involvement in monitoring Thaksin, and to ask for their support because of the unfair control put upon them last year when they weren't allowed to kill more than two people, burn buses, and threaten to blow up part of Din Daeng.

Then the convenient "finding" and "arresting" of a boy who supposedly threw firecrackers during the red rally, and confessed to all of these other actions that he was coerced into doing by the government, even though he had no fireworks on him when he was caught. (Huh? How was he caught then? Did he just walk up to them and say "Hey, I did all this stuff, arrest me!") Therefore by extension, the grenade attacks cannot have been done by red shirts, it must all be a government plot! Wow, what will tomorrow bring?

-----------Edit, I just saw mazeltov's post after I posted mine.

Yes, there was a lot of money spent by the dems, but if you had seen the advertising machine that Thaksin ran, (and still runs, those tv stations don't pay for themselves, and really, this "protest" is just more advertising by Thaksin), you would see that the amount spent by the dems has been minuscule in comparison.

Are you sure that you want to call other posters "commie" when you only have two choices to define the current protests, (which you seem to support)? It is either a campaign for Thaksin to get his (stolen) money back that the courts took away, (not their stated goal, but an obvious one, nonetheless), or you listen to their neo-communist charges against the "elite" who make their money by changing the rules so that the lower classes don't receive their proportional share. By controlling the means of production, the "elites" also control the worker's share of the profits, and hold these profits for themselves. I think that is the major complaint of the rice farmers that are protesting here, but that doesn't sound like support for rampant capitalism, does it?

This is why the red's talk of sincerity is laughable. They have a corporate, cronyist, (elite), leadership who cons the poor rural population with dreams of neo-communist equality.

Are you denying that Thaksin changed laws to benefit his business while he was PM? That he organized loans to Burma so that they could buy his company's products, while he was PM? Changed laws so that he didn't have to pay tax on the sale of his business, while he was PM? He stole money off the Thai people, WHILE HE WAS PM.

It is time to do something about these arrogant and stupid people that only have one goal. To bring a corrupt man back into power

i don't think it is just about Thaksin and not the goal of that movement. anyway, how they could do that - bring Thaksin back into power?

If you listen to what’s being shouted at the rally stages, or better yet listen to the nonstop broadcasts on Red radio, you’ll hear the constant repetition of two phrases: “Dissolve the National Assembly” and “Bring Thaksin back to power.” You don’t often hear one without the other.

As has been pointed out here before, the Reds use two sets of propaganda, one they distribute to mainstream print media (“We’re not just about Thaksin”) and one they repeat to their rank-and-file membership (“Bring back Thaksin now!”)

^ This is true, If you want first-hand proof, take a walk around Phan-Fa. I have done this a few times now, and most topics on stage are about bringing Thaksin back, and how it was unfair and illegal that he was removed from his position of "Dear Leader". If you don't understand that this is all about Thaksin, then you don't follow the news from red sources, you don't understand Thai, or both.

Looks like I picked the wrong day to give up sniffing glue. It would have helped all this seem for rational.

THE NATION: Red shirts' msg is getting more subtle now. It says "real pinksℜ whites" r fine, but yellow disguised as pinks/whites are bad

team A (anti-rally): "Please stop it! We want to live our normal life".

team B (anti-coup): "Please stop it! We want to live our normal life (back)".

Didn't team B get their life back once elections were held?

They did! In fact, they got their exact life back and were kicked out for the same type of offense again! Doomed to be repeated over and over until they figure out that electoral fraud is bad ... or until they get better about covering their tracks!
