webfact
Democrat MPs angry over Suthep's soft handling of reds By The Nation BANGKOK: -- Thirty Democrat MPs from Bangkok have voiced disappointment at the "soft approach" in dealing with the red shirts and want stronger anti-riot measures, including crowd dispersal. The Democrats, led by Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij, also threatened to mobilise thousands of their constituents to counter the red shirts if the government failed to evict the red shirts from Rajprasong Intersection. Korn has met with his fellow Democrats, including Ong-art Klampaiboon, three times since the mass rally began on March 12. The Democrats twice urged but failed to convince Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban to disperse the crowds. They viewed the government's inaction as encouraging the red shirts to step up their protests by marching around the capital for two consecutive Saturdays before camping at Rajprasong. "Many Bangkok residents are angry at the disruption and inconvenience caused by the protests and the Democrats will likely be punished by electoral defeat if the government fails to rein in the crowd within one or two days," a Democrat MP said. In a related development, the legal advisory team of the Democrat Party met yesterday to call for speedy legal action against three red-shirt leaders: Veera Musigapong, Jatuporn Promphan and Nattawhut Saikua. The three were involved in the Songkran mayhem last year but had been no progress in prosecuting them, Deputy Interior Minister Thaworn Senneam said. Thaworn also urged police and prosecutors to investigate attempts by the red shirts to skew information in order to rouse the crowds. New Politics Party secretary general Suriyasai Katasila said any attempts to incite hatred would not hinder efforts to achieve a sustainable outcome. He urged the Pheu Thai Party to review its strategy of seeking change via the red shirts. "The red shirts have no chance of winning and what they are doing now is to vent anger for their big boss," he said in reference to ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra. He voiced concern that the red shirts were holding society hostage by their encampment at Rajprasong. Today is the first day that Bangkok residents are due to return to work and there were worries about how people would react to traffic woes caused by the red shirts, he said. He called on the prime minister to speed up his efforts to shore up confidence, saying the government was seen as a lame duck in the face of the red shirts. "The prevailing sentiment is quite awkward because many despise the red shirts but at the same time they are in despair at Abhisit Vejjajiva's leadership," he said. He said he could not understand why the red shirts seemed inclined to attack the yellow shirts - who were not in a position of power. The red shirts had no justification in faulting the yellow shirts, he said. For example, the yellow shirts were not responsible for the closure of Suvarnabhumi Airport in 2008, he claimed, arguing that the shut-down was ordered by airport manager Serirat Prasutanont, who is a relative of red-shirt leader Veera. -- The Nation 2010-04-05 [newsfooter][/newsfooter]

TallForeigner
Let's stay with some realities here. Now it's already too late for the authorities to come in heavy handed against the Red Shirts in Rajprasong. I happen to live right in the middle of Rajprasong area, just behind the Intercontinental hotel so from my apartment windows I can see and hear all the action going on live. I don't know what's going on here just by hearsay but I can see it with my own eyes. If I leave my house I have to dive right into the red masses. Since 48 hours we are literally under siege by the Red Shirts - non stop street parties, loudspeakers, music, dancing...when do these people sleep? The Democrats clearly missed their only opportunity to do something and that would have been preventing the Reds from building their stage and moving in on Rajprasong. The Democrats have blown their opportunity big time. Now the Reds installed themselves firmly here. It's too late now for removing them with the police or army. Old and young from all walks of life and families with children are camping on the streets. Police or military action would cause a certain bloodbath. Nobody wants that! There are only two choices now: a heavy handed military or police approach causing certain casualties and massive property damage or to continue and try to negotiate and find a peaceful solution. An educated human lifeform with a brain and a heart will naturally go for the latter option. I just hope that the Democrats and the people in Bangkok are finally not as primitive as some TV farangs and call for violence. Another reality: The opinion of a nano-minority such as Australian-educated Isaan is not relevant at all. Counting the majority of the poor people in the countryside and listen to their opinion is what counts here.

That is a paraphrase combo of the concept of "New Politics" as espoused by the PAD and there new party "New Politics." It is also a far gentler paraphrase of what a lot of prolific posters here have been calling them.

hammered
Unfortunately to be a succesful Thai poltician you have to be so ultra macho. No doubt at some point if this isnt resolved quickly someone will start to organize their own counter rally, and I dont mean disorganized pinks but polticians. Thaksin himself used this approach in the early days of the PAD.

I understand the fact that your wife and her friends are against Thaksin. That's fine. They are entitled to their opinions but it gives us no information that might help us. You say they are telling families back in Issan "the real story'. Not much fact in that statement. What is their view of "the real story"? You say before they supported Thaksin. Don't you think it might be helpful to tell us: Why they like Thaksin before? Why they are against Thaksin now? What changed their minds? What is the real story? What was the older story? chadintheusa
Tomorrow is a national holiday. Bangkok residents should hold their own counter protest in the streets surrounding Rajasaprong and see how the Reds enjoy being prevented from having freedom of movement. Keep them from wandering off to restaurants and hotels and bathrooms. Make their lives as miserable as they want make the lives of Bangkok residents. If the police won't enforce the laws that have been implemented the Reds will never leave.

geriatrickid
The Democrats, led by Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij, also threatened to mobilise thousands of their constituents to counter the red shirts if the government failed to evict the red shirts from Rajprasong Intersection. Government ministers do not threaten the 1st minister, PM Abhisit if there is a unified position and cabinet solidarity. Does anyone else sense a power play underway? Is it possible that Korn sees himself as being in position to take over? Seems to me that if this comes as a result of the red activities than the red strategy has worked. Do the average Bangkok people care about the luxury shopping malls to a degree that their life would be miserable once they are closed? Certainly not! I can still buy food at thousands of little food stalls in the area. If I want to get out of the area I have a working skytrain just in front of my door. Am I miserable because I cannot use my car now? Certainly not! Well - everyone is as miserable as he chooses to be... My Thai wife and all her friends and neighbours in the area have got a similar positive attitude and I don't see any hatred against the Reds. I don't see anyone's life really being made miserable because of the Red Shirts. I enjoy living in Bangkok and not being a Thai so I have chosen to let the Thais solve their own problems and I take a more neutral position, not condemning anyone. I just wonder why so many TV farangs seem to have such a destructive attitude and seem to have chosen to make their own life miserable. I have chosen not to be miserable and enjoy life in Bangkok with all its conveniences and inconveniences. kiwikoppy
The PAD did not close the airport. Hahahaha it never grows old, funny to see that even politicians are using it now and defending the yellow. Lets do this, lock up the yellow and red shirts, everyone of them and get on with our life. P.s Sondhi did not even show up for his court case, isnt that slandering the justice system as well? Something everybody talks about over the red shirts. And i don't even know how that guy can still be walking free as he should have gotten the death penalty for remarks he made over the RF when he was drunk. Let these guys protest it is their right, nothing will come from it though and if they win the yellow shirts will come out again. we are living in a cartoon here.. Indeed as I said when the yellows took over the airports, shopping malls, and govt buildings, the govt and military should have never let this happen. However this was allowed to happen and this is what you have now whether you are for/against these sort of protests. It has become acceptable practice, so one can hardly be surprised when this indeed does happen and no one does anything to prevent it, other than make empty threats. You reap what you sew. Seems like the red shirts have finally found a way to get the attention of the Bangkok elite--hit them in their pocketbooks!. Funny how serious the tone has become since the protest has settled in the center of capitalism in Bangkok. If this is not a class struggle, why has the outrage about the protests gone up several notches since their occupation of the Rachaprasong area? At the same time, the behaviour of the protesters has been non-violent--a real democratic nation would listen to the needs of the protesters(not necessarily the demands) and enact laws to give the poor opportunities to gain economic success(i.e. buy a home, have quality health care, earn a decent living, etc.) In a real democratic society, the democrats would enact laws to protect the rights of protesters and demand equal rights for all citizens. Here, the Democrats protect the rights of the rich and keep the poor in their place--servants to the rich! We have yet to see whether the Democrats will resort to violence to protect the pocketbooks of their supporters...however, the handwriting is on the wall!
