webfact
Authorities Begin Near-Simultaneous Operations to Claim Back Protest Sites BANGKOK: -- At around 1 p.m. this morning the government launched an almost-simultaneous operations to claim back the protest sites seized by the anti-government red-shirt protesters. Since earlier this morning, military convoys were seen moving through Bangkok streets, especially the areas near Pan Fah Bridge, the red-shirts' main rally site. Undaunted by news and reports of possible dispersals of the protesters, the red-shirt leaders staged mobile rallies at various sites including Thaicom building in Lard Lum Gaew area in Pathum Thani Province and Region 1 Army headquarters on Sri Ayutthaya Road. The mobile rally at the Region 1 Army HQ has resulted in a minor skirmish between the protesters and anti-riot military officials. Confronted by the red-shirt protesters, who demanded they defy the government's orders and stop acting as a tool to the Abhisit administration, around 5,000 anti-riot military officials were deployed to form lines of defence in front of the Region 1 Army HQ. The officials slowly advanced on the protesters and had forced them to fall back. Red-shirt leader Kwanchai Praiphana had urged the protesters from Pan Fah to join the mobile rally at the Region 1 Army HQ. As more red-shirt protesters moved in on the anti-riot officials, high-pressured water was prayed at the protesters, rubber bullets and tear gas were used to deter the demonstrators from breaching the human security barriers. After around 15 minutes, the red-shirt leaders announced on the main stage at Pan Fah Bridge, calling for the red-shirt protesters to return to the Pan Fah rally site. While the protesters were falling back towards the Pan Fah stage, military officials were moving in from Makkawan Rangsan Bridge to pressure the red-shirt protesters to leave the area. A small number of monks, who are sympathizers of the red-shirt movement, had formed a protective line between the protesters and the military officials. Sounds of explosions, believed to be from tear gas grenades, were also heard from the Makkawan Rangsan Bridge near the UN headquarters. At around 2.15 P.M. the government claimed it had regain Pitsanulok Road from the protesters. At the same time, a similar operation was taking place at areas surrounding the Ratchaprasong intersection. Anti-riot officials, moving on foot, were moving in on the protesters at Ratchaprasong area. In response to the heavy security presence, red-shirt leaders at Ratchaprasong ordered six-wheeler trucks to be placed around the perimeter of the protest site to prevent the authorities from advancing on the protesters. Red-shirt leader Nuttawut Saigua had called for red-shirt supporters to join their fellow protesters at Ratchaprasong and Pan Fah. The Center for the Administration of Peace and Order said it's prepared to use incremental measures, from light to intensive, to reclaim the areas protected by the Internal Security Act and the Emergency Decree. So far, no serious injuries or deaths have been reported. Vajira Hospital has revealed that 8 people have been treated for rally-related injuries. -- Tan Network 2010-04-10 [newsfooter][/newsfooter]
