I posted recently about a beautiful tree near where I live and posted some pictures I'd taken. I always carry my small compact camera with me and love to go out with the SLR. I was wondering if there was any sort of camera club on Samui where they meet up and amateurs like me can get some tips from the proper photographers ?

Would any body else be interested ? Cheers :):D

Hello H2o Dunc,

I've been learning the ins & outs of SLR's more so recently... using the different settings rather than "Auto Mode" ... it is amazing the things you can do when you know & remember the settings! But it's like anything else, if months go by you tend to forget what you learned.

So yes, I think it might be a great idea to get a group together & head out to different places to practice... so add me to the list if you get some interest! & PM me.

Bye the bye, your tree photos spurred on me getting a local garden forum going... (I had been thinking about it for months) perhaps we can get the Mods to move that post & we can include trees there???

I'd be interested in this guys. I'm still shooting in automatic on my Canon DSLR. I haven't had the time to go out and play around with the different settings.

I just picked up a nice lens the other day. 50mm Prime with 1.4 F-Stop. Excellent for portraits. Did a little walk around Suratthani with it...

cameras are the modern day devils tool. the amount of time i have been caught out with cam or video evidence is not funny. though some might thing so.

2nd, 3rd and 6th shot are nice and a good example of the bokeh (out of focus) rendition of this particular lens. I use it almost exclusively as my "walk around lens".

Try the 85mm F1.8 - cheap and fantastic

Well, we should do something here!

I'm "retired", but suspect some of you work, so I guess we need to work around that?

Great way for exercise too, I went in a what turned out to be a four hour hike up a dried up river bed today, hoping to reach the Secret Waterfalls, but we went up the wrong creek! :)

It's just amazing some of the flora & what were obviously huge trees growing up the hills/mountains at one time, some stumps 6 feet across... How the island must have changed... some of the largest Palm tree fronds I ever seen too.

But as far as using the SLR cameras go, by setting the ISO settings correctly, how much you can shoot in low light conditions without flash, which generally ruins a picture, or even compensate for high light conditions too...

The other & first lesson I need is how to upload pictures here... I click the Image button, above & it wants a http:// link, so that stumps me, to loading single images rather than using my Picasa sites.... which I actually don't mind doing but some times one or two pictures are enough.... Could someone explain that... weird as I have loaded without problem to other TV sites in the past.

Great pictures Matt!

The 50mm prime is on a crop-frame camera - so it is 85mm on this camera....

I have the EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM for walk-around lens. It's an amazing lens. The quality is awesome. Just need to learn to use the settings instead of Auto, Portrait, etc... 8 D

Thanks Jimmy. The 50mm 1.4 is a fast lens as well. The little girl was on the merry go round moving at the time I shot it. No blur at all.

Unfortunately I work nearly every hour of the day so have little time to go out with my camera at the moment. I need to find me a manager or someone to take care of things...!

Hi... I was thinking the same about starting a camera club ..I live in Lamai....and I have a friend who is also interested....I agree it is far better fun to have a small outing and learning from each other , I use to belong to a club back in Ireland and I miss the crac and banter .

I know we can put photos on this website but I think its better to meet up with each other and have discussions on different areas that we are interested in.

I have a bar in Lamai of which I have a second floor with large lcd tv.I would have no problem to have a club night and we could use it for showing your photos and comps. if interested we could start with a meeting to see what we could do to move this forward.

I would think we need at least 5 people but the more the merrier.

You can contact me through this site or give me a call on Please PM for phone #

My interests were mostly underwaterphotograpy and can help anyone in that area but would be willing to hear from anyone that is into infared or hdr .

Count me in. There are also another couple of guys who have PM'ed me so I presume they would be up for it. I'm in Lippa Noi so Lamai isn't a problem.I used to do a lot of underwater stuff with my customers till the camera and housing went missing. :)

Ok H2oDunc...I mentioned what i suggeted today to my mate so he is up for it as well.... what I am going to suggest is that I wait another few days to see if anyone else responds to this thread and then we can arrange some time that suits to all meet up and see what way we would like to organise the " club" . It would be great if other areas of thailand could do the same and then we could have competitions between ourselves with Thaivisa being the judges or something to that format.

The bottom line is to have fun and learn from others and not to have anything taken to serious... :)

Are those smiling Irish eyes, you have....? :D:)

OK for me too, seems to have people from every section of the Island, When every one is ready, PM me!

Yes, agreed, let's make it fun & not too serious!

When my underwater camera gets back from Sony (grrrr) they have had it two months or more now... All I have is the casing which only fits that one model.

But Hin Ya di Ya (SP) is a pretty good place to snorkel & see some coral here on Samui, if people are into underwater stuff... But I suspect above water for most... except at Songkran of course!

P.S. Jimmy, loved those Songkran shots you sent me - what did you shoot them with?

Matt,

Those were with my Canon 500D ...(Most, from within a pickup, so through tinted windows too .... playing it safe) I been very happy with that camera, easy to read controls... reasonably light to carry around too. My Canon, 30D has double battery pack... heavy to lug around & not as easy to see the settings, as the controls are read through the viewer, where as the 500D you can read on the screen.

I also have Sony Cam, which needs to get more use, :Dbut editing movies is a very tedious process...

Then there is my Sony pocket camera, with underwater casing ... Sony in BKK said they would fix it, (not focusing well) but are dragging their feet... the Salesman I use at Sirison, has gone out his way to chase them on it, but so far to no avail. They (Sony) seem to want 5000 baht to fix a 7000 baht camera, which is under warranty :) ... I don't think so.... I told them to send it back.

Last year, when I sent D 30 camera & lenses to Canon, in BKK, to be cleaned & they were back within two weeks, & cost was not that bad.... Again the Salesman at Sirison (Rin) went out of his way to pack & make sure all the paperwork (serial numbers recorded etc) was done, & mailed the camera & lenses to Canon...(got there, next day) & then delivered to my house when it came back... :D

I have also recently hooked up the computer to the TV, with HDMI cable, surprised with the good quality of the images & sound on the TV/stereo system... there is also a RCA cable for the sound. That works well with VCL player...but not with Windows Media Player... for some reason.... again, the guy from Sirison, I have to give him 10/10 for customer service... a small tip saves a ton of frustration!

HDMI cables & other cables come from the Panasonic Shop opposite Tesco, Chawang, (another store which is good, BTW, if anyone looking for any kind of cables & connections).

one picture, for those who did not get my full link!
