Whats the story about mentioning other useful message boards?

Asia-Wolfie had a topic barred because he was looking for another gay Thai message-board.

I think i know which one he was looking for, but I had PM him because the topic was closed down.

Surely it is ok to point other people to other useful cources of information?

I do not see anything that bars this in the rules.

As an aside, in fact i think i publicised ThaiVisa on the other message board to somebody seeking information, without any problems!

The courtesty cannot be returned obviously!

Probably this thread'll get closed soon, but I would guess the reason is they don't want people using the site merely to advertise for their own places- but it does cut down on the board's utility... on the other hand, I've noticed that when the link was just for a laugh or for a serious information source, it's often left up- so maybe there are some guidelines... or maybe not.

I understand that the moderators do not want "people using the site merely to advertise for their own places". However, they can do that by simply clicking briefly into any site recommended and glancing at it briefly. That should be enough to tell a moderator if it is a genuine site or spam. If it is spam they can delete it.

(I would say that the Moderators in the gay section know what most of the other good gay sites in Thailand are anyway - they even post on some of them)

Saying that "we cannot allow any recomendations because some might be bad" is pretty weak I must say.

Or they could have a rule that other "Forum" sites are allowed to be recommended, but not other kinds of sites.

There is a few ways to deal with the problem

I asked a similar question a while back and this is the response I had from a moderator.

If someone is asking a question and you're being informative its great, thats what the place is all about. thumbsup.gif

It's the unsolicited plugs we watch for.

So in short.... if you are replying to specific question and the aim of posting the link is t to be helpful and informative, then this is acceptable.

If you just start a post and say "visit here..it's great..." with a link, then this is not acceptable.

I have seen some instances where some links to commercial sites have been removed, I would think to protect advertising revenue, and to be fair that should be up to the discretion of the site management IMHO

As "they" don't like moderation issues discussed in public, it may be better to PM a moderator and ask, ChrisP would probably be the best. :o

If the other site was a forum board such as this then you have to understand at the end of the day business is business and they wouldn't want to be advertising another forum board for free.

Fair enough really, and I agree with Totster a quick PM to a mod would get you better results than pissin them off discussing mod issues here.

Great avatar by the way Totster, wasn't it you with the penguin one before? I got the same problem with this one, keep on staring at it. :o:D

Exactly. ThaiVisa values it's members, but, at the end of the day it is a commercial WebSite.

If you owned a web site for Mercedes Cars, would you be happy to promote a link to a BMW Web Site..?

Get my drift...? :o

I don't make the rules here.. I just agree to follow them.

There is always the tiny little PM button...
