Don't worry Matt cos you didn't miss a great deal except a bunch of Grown Men & Women playing with Kids Toys & behaving like 10 Year Olds ( All Farang of course )..

I went out with the Kids in the back of the Jeep, they loved it, i personally have never seen so many Social Misfits from all over the World congregated in one place at one time than in our 30 minute Tour of Lamai but there we go..

Glad your kids liked it! I've had a few great Songkrans, but it can wear thin!

Some of the Thai -> English translations are so different, I try to get it down as best as possible, but romanising some Thai words just doesn't work. That's why people learning should learn to read and write! 8 D

I've been on full detox today, managed to get a quick Black Canyon in this morning before the craziness started, then have been sat at home working on a server for a local customer. Watching a drive mirror re-synchronise... 1%.... 2%.... 3%.... It's going to be a long night tonight as well...

Well at least it'll nearly be over in an hour (when it gets dark) and time for me to head out for a quick bite... there will definitely be some stragglers left...

Tomorrow morning will be peaceful with everyone in bed nursing hang-overs... 8 D

Yesterday I did. And the day before. And the day before that. That place makes the best brownies on the island, served with icecream as well. You know if yourself Bridge!...

But today I wasn't going anywhere near that place even in the truck... I saw them waiting for me today when I took Boo to work. I'd have been soaked the moment the truck door opened...

I went through an awful detox, no brownie, truffles or cafe latte this afternoon. I got the shakes and everything, I even resorted to some Oolong for my caffeine buzz...

Made it to Sydney's fish and chips tonight dry. They have beer there now, so beer batter, was awesome. Man I'm turning in to a fat b*astard...

Just tried it on my Thai friend and she does not have a clue what I am trying to say.

She just keeps trying to correct me to say 'Sawat-dee mai Tuuk Kon'

I would suggest for you to learn the Thai language instead of just looking in a translation book and writing down what you see. If you look in different translation books you will see in many of them that thai words with Roman letters are often spelt differently in each book. But if you learn the Thai language you will soon find out the correct way to pronounce words and the best way to spell them with roman alphabet letters. Where you say ' Bpee ' it would not really make any sense in any tone. It best say to spell the word with roman letters would just be Bee.

Good look with your future learning anyway. At least you are making a effort and learning the langauge.

i often wondered how people can learn thai from a book if their native language doesn't have all the sounds required to pronounce the words.

when i started to learn thai, i found it susprising to have the sound "é" "eu", i thought it was specific to french language, in fact the only sound i had to learn is to pronounce snake "gnou" coming from the throat and drink "deum".

btw happy new year is simply "sawadee pimai took khrun" <--- R pronounced like in french.

Hey Walkingman.

I'm incredibly lazy when it comes to learning Thai. My friend game me the Teach Yourself Thai book by David Smythe, one of the best books for learning. It's been on my book-shelf for the past 3 years... He teaches you to read and write from the start. I did a few chapters but found I didn't have the time after work, I just wanted to relax. When you've heard Thai all day for 8 hours constantly, it's the last thing you want to hear on a night time!

I have learned so far by learning phrases and it has caught on from there. I remember the first time I was hungry, I asked a girl how you would say it, "huew cow" so I wrote it down on a piece of paper and went from there. After a year or two of hearing Thai everyday you start to pick out each words, i.e. you hear a word a few times and then you remember it and find out what it means. I always ask them to spell it using the thai alphabet so I can pronounce it as well as possible. The tones are pretty easy, it's just remembering which ones.

The problem is you need to go to school to learn proper sentence structure, etc. The locals tell me my Thai is clear (chad) but it's back to front! LOL. I learned a lot from my Thai staff as well, i.e. getting directions, etc. I can get around pretty well with my Thai now. It's served me proud in Suratthani a couple of times when I got lost in my truck.

Unfortunately I learned some of my Thai from the bar years ago, so had to learn to forget words, ie. the word for needing a pee, deow (piss) and swap it with the proper word, chee (low-tone) and a few others to be su-pap when speaking. Some words I'd never repeat again, it makes me cringe when I hear foreigners walking around saying "stop-solop-solaiii...", "huup-bak" ,etc. Nasty...

One of the worst ones I heard was when I was having a massage one day and the girl who was massaging me said to her friend she was aching for sh*t. Nice.

Luckily my girlfriend is from Bangkok so I learn words from her. She speaks central Thai (Glang) which is really what you want to learn. Southern Thai is very fast...

Hey NHJ - sorry to be pedantic - but everyone is pronounced tuk-kon (no khrun) - there is no word khrun... it's kon. Tired is another hard word to learn, nuey.. 8D
