Contact OMS Aberdeen (Offshore Marine Services) tell them that you are looking for work in the Middle East or Asia. OMS also have offices in Dubai and Australia.

I think there web site is www.oms-uk.co.uk and there is links to their other offices.

Thailand offshore - Forget it, not saying its impossible, but very highly unlikely, you are about 12 years too late.

The DMF is making it harder and harder by the year to get WP's for offshore, and in fact below a certain job level/job description a WP wil not be approved under any circumstances - Thai nationals only. Your only possiblity is the service companies (the usual suspects) who operate in the GOT, even they are under pressure to employ Thai nationals as well.

Vietnam - Quite a few big projects on the horizon over next few years and in fact a lot of the expats I know working in Thailand are looking towards Vietnam as their next career move as Thailand becomes more difficult to operate in. A lot of the guys already have an inside track by virtue of working in Thailand so they will get the "plum jobs" when it does happen.

Cambodia

Not much happening there at the moment, possiblities over next years...Maybe, if Thailand and Cambodia can get their act together

Malaysia

Although there are expats in the business there, quite difficult to get a foot in the door, as most jobs are earmarked "Malaysian only"

Brunei

Dont have too much info, other than to say, yes expats employed there in various capacities.

Austraila

Lots of big projects happening over next few years and personnel will be in demand, but we have the following swear word to include.....HIGH TAX.... :)

On the middle east, there are few posters on TV who work in the region, and they will be able to advise better

Not fully agree on the Malasia part, some drilling company operating in Malaysia waters still have most senior possition done by expats.

I am talking about Seadrill, Ensco and KCA deutag and possitions as Chief mechanic, maintain SV, Barge M and OIM.

Try this 3 company's.

Good luck

As Soutpeel noted, service companies are a good place to start, Weatherford has a web site with vacancies, world wide, and you can register with resume direct for a position of interest. Schlumberger, Halliburton are probably set up similarly, and you will note that this opens up a area much larger than offshore with various working schedules, etc. Good luck

I managed to get work offshore in West Java after unsuccessfully applying on the net for work in Asia for ages. I took a trip to Singapore, with the aim of staying two weeks and just look for work the old way of walking into companies off the street, and there are a lot of offshore service companies in Singapore. I prepped with a bit of homework before I went. CV, cover letter and certs. Within 3 days I had 2 offers of work. Was I just lucky…. I don’t know, but it worked for me.

Luck plays a definite role, right place, right time, as does contacts, the hardest thing to do is to break into the business, if you manage to last 6 -12 months without getting run off, and have built up a good contact base, the subsequent jobs are easier to get, Also dont ever burn your bridges anywhere, as some time, some place, you will bump into somebody you have worked with before and they could be your boss now.. :)

Couldnt agree more about not burning bridges as offshore game is a small world and its amazing how many times you bump into folk from previous jobs...especially in the pipeline game

Dead right, it's amazing how many jobs I walked into round the world to find someone I've worked with before, it's more like a family once you get in but that has it's down side. Screw up and everybody knows about it.

As for Viet Nam, the Russians have had the offshore work sewn up for a long time but they are gradually being eased out. However the Vietnamese are a different story from the Thais and many of them are easily as good as an expat.

Unfortunately I don't see much hope finding an opening as a mechanic unless you have FPSO experience.
