2500 pound can last a year in pattaya easily.  That also includes getting drunk every 2nd day ( calculated "getting drunk"= drinking a 26 of sang som )

Impossible :o (unless your a complete and utter ponce) :D

I think he's a complete and utter ponce Dave... :D

totster :D

15,000 baht a month..... :D

What a lifestyle you can maintain on that!!!! :D

I live near Korat and am lucky enough not to have too many budgetary restraints, I reckon that it costs about 25,000 a week and we live very well. :D

House, new car, travel in Thailand, good healthcare when needed etc.

My biggest expense is my 6 month old son. :D

15,000 is far, far too little... (Even if your tastes don't stretch to what Pattaya offers...)

But your right, Thailand is a LOT cheaper than England, and your money goes a lot, lot further.

Right now, I'm living in Chiang Mai on the kind of budget the poster is talking about. I had twice as much last year in Pattaya. It could be done but it does depend on your tastes. I wouldn't want it to be much less than 5kUKP though.

What planet are you living on :D 2500 pounds wouldnt last you 3 monthe let alone 1 year. I think you must have made a miscalculation somewhere, either that or you live in a carboard box and eat out of dustbins :o

I need more than 2500 pounds per month!!! Sigh!!

But at least I live well.

With 5500 pounds, having housing and car/motorbike to rent, your life will look much more like the one of a MONK, but if you're happy ......

OPS A MONK IN PATTAYA???? Am I missing something??

I came to Pattaya 4 and a half years ago with my newly acquired Cambridge RSA Celta and about 7000 ukbp.

My intention was to work as an English teacher and live in Pattaya. I made the mistake of not starting employment straightaway deciding to have a short holiday stay first. However days turned into weeks and weeks into months and it wasn't until after 5 months a lot of enjoyment but a significantly smaller pile of travellers cheques meant that I had to start work.

I started off on 23 k a month and after my original cash finally ran out (after about 10 months in total) had to live on this amount. It wasn't comfortable but not quite desperate.

Over the past 4 years I have increased my monthly income step by step to about 65 k. Of this I now spend 40k, save 25k and am settled.

It depends on your own lifestyle and spending habits of course but for me:-

20 k possible but certainly not comfortable.

30 k You can have some enjoyment but you will also have to have a few nights in.

40 k Comfortable

Anything over 40k you should be able to save a bit.

Sorry, there are absolutely no hospitals or doctors of any quality in Phuket, and Phuket is definitely not "cool". Much better if you go to Bangkok.

I live off about 100K per month and I struggle some months. Better to save more money before you come. Nothing worse than watching others enjoying themselves while you are counting your pennies.

I'm with cooL_guY_corY who is obviously a young guy having a great time in LOS. I guess the older you get the more money you tend to spend.

EDIT: To the older guys... think back to when you were young... the times when material possession meant less.

A roof over your head, a bottle of Som, what else do you need? :o

Noon on the west coast of north America id 2:00Am in LOS.

My wife and I live very simple when we are in LOS, in the north. We have a house and a motorbike, eat out continually, don't drink or smoke and live a bit native among the relatives. When we are in Canada we spend about 50,000BT a month, in Thailand we spend about 1/2 of that and live better, but more spartan.

everyone lives differently in Thailand thats for sure. Right now iam working to come back in Canada right now, time shows bkk i guess i didnt set up. Also this is obviously a stupid question but what is LOS, its Thailand i gathered.. like Land of Smiles or something? anyways i was living off 15000 or less for the longest time and i was in phuket too which is expensive compared to pattaya and expensive as ###### when compared to say.. khon kaen, i live in a fan room with thai people, i cook rice and thai food in my room like thai people do, i dont have a tv, i wash my own clothes, i dont go to bars(well lady bars anyway), i usually just hang out with my friends and try to avoid the farangs. everybody gets something out of thailand and anyone on this board is 10 steps ahead of the people who have never been to the kingdom anyway.. Now that i am back in canada i am easily the most unhappy ive been in my life, everything here is possesion based at least it seems like it to have any kind of fun.. which is really depressing. anyways, i was never trying to say living on a higher budget is bad or anything, was just saying different people live differently and want different things, like i am sure a lot of people would shit their pants if they didnt have aircon or there satellite tv or even the ol mo-sAI , actually i just read my post and ###### my girl friend cleaned my clothes, not me. i cook super legit labmoo tho..

Youb are absolutely right, the "gipsy style of life" when you're in ur 20s, a sort of freack life, 100% freedom, no watch (when I was ur age I never had a watch since I had no appointments and no need to be slave of the time) ....... I understand all.

But the query is about a reasonable good life in Thailand, ...... something different.

If a person wants can live also with ZERO  money, sleeping on the beach and begging for a soup, ...... and in Thailand is much better than in Canada!!

But to live in a reasomable way, with a reasonable apartment, a car, some health insurance, some decent food, some fun, ...... then the bill will probably go up to 60,000 baht a month, may be also with 50,000 baht you can do it, but I stroingly doubt that you can live with 30,000 baht a month

last and least: 1 trip back to UK once a year???

may be a trip to Cambodia or 2-3 domestic flights in Thaialnd every year???

Do you want to live in the same place 365 days a year for 10 years!!!

Are you in jail?? Did u kill anyone??

Freedom also to have some baht in ur pocket to visit some other places, no need for ***** stars Hotels, but at least keep some cash to live ur life!!!!

Well, as you know, Canada is a pretty big place (2nd largest country in the world you know), and even though it doesn't have a large population (maybe 33 million ?), it does have a lot of diversity, even amongst the english speaking portion of the population. With that diversity comes different styles (dialects if you will) of speaking and even writing/typing. Whereas on the east (or "Least") coast, you may hear: "I'se da bye what catches da fish", on the west (or "Best") coast you might hear: "I'm the dude that snags the scalies".

Not all of us Canucks have grow-ops in our basements, and spend our days sampling the crop ! :D

Some of us can even string together semi-coherent sentences, on an infrequent basis :D

What were we talking about before this ? Ah yes, living in the Land Of Smiles (that's LOS to you Cory), on pennies (or baht) per day.

I could get by on 15,000 a month, but the quality of life would definetly suck, and wouldn't leave much room for unforeseen expenses. However, if I had a house and transportation already fully paid for, and only had to worry about food, utilities and entertainment, that same 15,000 would go a lot further.

It still wouldn't be great, but it would be enough to have a wee nip or 2 at Dave's once in awhile (even better if he offered discount prices to local ex-pats ! Especially local expat ThaiVisa members !)

Don't take this wrong Jai Dee, but often we start to show our age when we think the people that are younger than our children are speaking a language from outer space. One of my best friends here in Canada runs a business that has a lot of teen and early 20's customers. Sometimes when we are having coffee they sit with us and often I'm totally out of the loop with their lingo. So you are not alone. :D
