Rats In Thailand

Featured Replies

I've learned to respect rats. My wife summed it up quite neatly when she chucked a piece of chicken to a rat lurking behind a bucket in the soi while we had a bowl of noodles: "Rats must eat also", she said. The rat took of with the chicken, probably very happy with his loot...

A friend of mine runs a restaurant in Pratunam. Last year there was a rat who frequently visited the restaurant patio, but he would never go inside. He sat outside and waited, looking at us until we gave him something to eat. Eventually, we gave him the name "Gaston". This went on every day for about six months. One day Gaston didn't show up. We missed him, and I remember finding myself worrying about a rat.

We never found out what happened to Gaston, but then one day I realised that there are a lot of cats in the area. And that's how it is; cats must eat also.
