PM calls on people not to panic about economic woes

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra today called on the public not to panic about many problems affecting the economic growth, pledging the government would work harder to cope with them.

He conceded rising fuel prices, southern unrest, impacts from last December tsunami disaster, current account deficit, and higher inflation rate had erode confidence in the country’s economy.

“It is normal everybody feels upset with the ongoing economic woes. But don’t panic about the situation and be cool because the government will work harder to cope with them.”

At the same time, he said, people needed to prepare to do their own duties to the utmost under the current economic condition.

Asked how the government would do with the transport operators’ request for help since they are adversely affected by rising oil prices, the premier said he had instructed state agencies concerned to look after.

“We will do our best what we have to do. However, everyone needs to try to help themselves as well,” he said.

Yeah, that's what the people have to do....help themselves......just like the PM and his cronies have been doing for years ie helping themselves. Concerned Thais would call it "Kin muang" (literally "eating the country" or as they would put it " sucking the country dry".) Mai pen rai na.

We seem to have moved from the earlier party line of none of these factors will have any effect on the economy to don't panic, we'll try to help but you might be on your own . :o
