Police Monkey Killed in Pattani Dog Attack

Santisuk Promdao, popularly known as the police monkey, has been buried after succumbing to fatal injuries it sustained in a dog attack.

Police Lance Corporal Yutthapol Promdao, head of the 212 Santisuk police operation unit in Taharn subdsitrict in Pattani's Sai Buri district, along with his fellow police officers, bid farewell to his beloved long-tailed macaque named Santisuk, that was killed in a dog attack on Friday.

The male monkey was dressed in a police uniform and wrapped in a white cloth before being laid to rest at the police operation base where it was taken in and trained.

The monkey was attacked by three dogs when it was chained at a car park in a tutorial school in Songkhla while waiting to perform as a military doctor in a film.

The film is about projects initiated by His Majesty the King and was produced by the Pattaya Film Company.

Yutthapol adopted Santisuk and trained the monkey to assist him while on duty. Every morning, he would dress the monkey in a police uniform and bring him out on patrol to help improve relations with the local Muslim community.

He said Santisuk loved sitting on top of the police car siren when out on patrol.

The monkey helped the police at road side checkpoints by entertaining locals while their vehicles are being inspected.

It also helped locals collect coconut free of charge and had been featured in countless Thai and foreign news reports.

Why was it chained up in a car park and unsupervised if it was so valuable?

This reminds me of the story in which the police received specially bred police dogs and then deliberately starved them to death so they would not have the hassle of having to take care of them.

Fallen Police Monkey Gets Successor

A villager in Pattani has given officers at Sai Buri police station a new monkey to replace the popular police monkey that was killed in a dog attack.

A five-year-old pig-tailed macaque was given to officers at Sai Buri police station in Pattani by an unidentified person following the death of their beloved monkey named Santisuk, popularly known as the police monkey.

Santisuk was killed in a dog attack last Friday.

The monkey's owner said he sympathized with police and local people who are close to Santisuk and wanted the good feelings as well as the image of a monkey taking part in a patrol to return as his monkey is very similar in appearance to the dead one.

He hopes his monkey will help enliven the security operations and make passers-by more relaxed like what Santisuk did.

The monkey was named Santiparp and it is expected to contribute to peace in the troubled region.

Police put Santisuk's police uniform on Santiparp.

The first task Santiparb will have to do is act as a military doctor in a film. The film is about projects initiated by His Majesty the King and produced by the Pattaya Film Company.
