The Thai PM actually offered a generous compromise and if the red shirts had taken it they would now all be home with their families, 24-plus people would not have been killed, and Thailand would have had an election in 6 months. Not taking his offer was a very, very stupid and selfish mistake.

I felt the same way about GB. I think the difference is how we Westerners are encouraged in school to question things and do some critical thinking. Many of the people here in the rural areas are easily influenced and don't ask questions. Plus, Thais have not grown in a country where democracy has runned smoothly...coups/ bribery in elections/ taking over property when politics dont go your way.... Some do not know any other way .

Perhaps the leaders are being paid by Thaksin, but all of my wife's relatives and friends are Red Shirt supporters and many have been to the demonstrations in Bangkok. None of them have been paid a single Baht. They are not rich folks, some are quite poor. They believe in what they are doing, but recently I have heard some express some doubts and confusion about the direction these protests have taken. I think some of these folks think the Red leadership has gone over the top, and would rather have a peaceful resolution.

I'm living in Laos and I can tell something about living conditions here compared to Thailand... let's say that here the gov have a functional way to deal with protesters... that's why there are no protesters...

The royal elite PAD set the cirriculum in the rural thai schools, they "brainwash" the young children of thailand to love the royal elite, in my village the schools have "no english" education and "no computer" education in the schools. I ask you what future a child has in this world with no computer training and no english? This is 2010? The royal elite have done a good job brainwashing children making obedient subservient adults. This is 2010 not 1945 or 1972, Thai people are fighting the future of their children, fighting for equality, fighting for freedom of speech, fighting for justice, a decent chance at an education.
