Too Be Or Not Too Be Expectorated

Featured Replies

Came here a lot, on holidays and almost the norm as far as things go, but now that I live here, well, I've noticed something else.

A spit here a spit there, who really cares, unless you are a footy umpire. I got to say I had a lot of expectations however the slagging that goes on here is just too much.

There's coloured slagging spiced up with the sour juices of the betel nut, there's good old smoker slagging and there is just plain old slagging. I must admit that I haven't seen the old greenie spurting forth as you would in good old Goodna the toilet in Australia that I lived in before this. However the wits there weren't up to it, preferring to counter any critiicism by downing the paint sniffing bottle and using multiple expletives and wildly inaccurate punches.

So overall I prefer Thailand but I long for a bit less slagging.(especially from dear ol mum, although I'm not sure that drooling counts)

But in all seriousness, if spitting was in the Olympics there would be a gold medal waiting.

China would have the gold sewn up.

They obviously don't know how TB is spread.

And yes, it is still out there even in Western countries....

What bothers me, and not just in Thailand, is people spitting where you might want to put your feet. On the footpath, on the ground at busstops etc.. The gutter is about a foot to one side, so do it there. Same with vomiting or dog crap.. Obviously you can't blame the dog, but when it's controlled by a person, drag it to the gutter.

Yes the spitting is within control, Im not sure about vomiting though, as a former cab driver I can say that males were easier to detect about to spew with their hiccoughing and general behaviour, wheras the females would sit there not issuing a sound before letting loose a gusher. sometimes at both ends, Perhaps this is part of the reason why Thais doff their shoes before going inside, although I stand corrected if this is not the case

Reminds me of a funny Australian short film I saw about 10 years ago.. There was a bit in it where the passenger looks queezy and the driver is saying 'concentrate, concentrate'.. Then he just explodes over the windscreen..

I think Thailand is about 40 years behind the UK in eliminating public spitting.

I remember that in the UK in the 1970's there were still sign on the public buses and trains "No Spitting or Hawking"

I believe that 'hawking' is the grunting and snorting necessary to bring up a more juicy gob of spit :) .

No littering, no spitting.

Auburn Council wants all our residents to join us to stop people littering and spitting in the local government area.

I left Vietnam because of all the hawking, expectorating, snorting and other animal behaviour expressed by a large proportion of VN inhabitants. Believe me, the Thai people are the most polite, considerate, well behaved and least irritating of people in SE Asia. Suggest you do a bit of travelling first then post your observations.

PS the Nepalese are champions in the hawking stakes in my experience.

Yeah, but that's Auburn... rough as...

China would have the gold sewn up.

Agreed - you havent been to China if you havent stepped on a Chinese Oyster. :)

Is it Singapore or Malayasia where they cane you if you spit on the sidewalk?

singapore, big fines for spitting, throwing gum or cigarette butts on the pavement.

Unfortunately in recent years I think the UK has been regressing in this respect, and it's not unusual to see gangs of feral youths spitting all the time. A couple of decades of watching low-life professional footballers on the tv gobbing all over the place has persuaded the young and impressionable that it's a smart thing to do.

@ the time of my last Auburn visit I thought I was in some foriegn country, I had to whip my passport out and check to see where I had landed :)

It's spitting indoors that gets me, especially on carpeted floors.

I haven't seen this in Thailand, but in China/HK definitely.

I only spit on mirrors cuz it looks twice as impressive. I do like when in Thai public toilets to make sure I do the loudest hawking up I can......... sometimes I just cant compete with the locals though!!

There was a young man from Darjeeling

Who boarded a bus bound for Ealing

Said a sign on the door

'Please don't spit on the floor'

So he stood up and spit on the ceiling.
