I seem to remember that an American vice presidential candidate was criticised by the American press because he told a group of students that they had spelled the word Potato without an e. They had spelled it in the American English way, as in Potato rather than Potatoe as in British English.

If you are referring to the Dan Quayle incident, I recall that a bit differently. Dan Quayle was notable for his 'deer in the headlights' looks when asked certain challenging questions.

I may be wrong, but wasn't Quayle ambushed .. basically asked by a group of students to spell 'potato' as news crews watched? And he spelled it 'p-o-t-a-t-o-e'.

His most famous blunder occurred when he corrected student William Figueroa's correct spelling of "potato" to "potatoe" at an elementary school spelling bee in Trenton, New Jersey, on June 15, 1992.[15][16] Although he was relying on cards provided by the school which included the misspelling, Quayle was widely lambasted for his apparent inability to spell the word "potato".
