True Broadband In Pattaya/jomtien

There have been many varying reports in past threads about TRUE Broadband in Pattaya/Jomtien. Does anyone know the current status of the reliability of TRUE?

Is it fully available throughout the Pattaya/Jomtien area?

Actual international access speed & do they employ any port throttling?

Is it delivered over TV coax cable or basic copper-pair phone line?

Is there any better or faster service in Pattaya/Jomtien than TRUE?

Thanks in advance for any comments from anyone.

No matter which ISP you select in Jomtien they all use the same fiber optic cable. When the fiber optic is down they are all off line. The more you pay for service only gets a quicker respose, answer to your problem. They'll respond quicker to your complaints but, you still have to wait the same time as others with lesser service until the problem is resolved. This is from experience. I have 3 internet connections in Jomtien. One down all down! TIT!

I've had CAT in Jomtien for 5 years and they have very little down time. It's only 2 Mbps and expensive by today's comparison to their competitors, but was the best value available 5 years ago. About 3 times the cost of True which advertises twice the speed of CAT.

Are any of your three connections from TRUE and which one do you find to be the fastest and best value?

Not True.

Some providers will share the same international cables but all of the key players have their own.

Also all of the telephone operators run fiber to their own junction boxes and then send down their phone lines.

Sophon have their own dedicated fiber running around Pattaya and Jomtien which is independent to the TV. Internationally this is shared with CAT.

CAT have their own fiber around Pattaya and Jomtien.

If this is your experience then please state your 3 providers so others can avoid that combo, but you are definitely wrong saying they all share cables.

I know, I very nearly took a job managing a local Internet provider and looked into it in detail.

Hi Arjay,

When you had the three different ones installed did you request a fresh line for each one? I think there is something wrong with the line that my ToT connection came in on. The line for this connection was already installed in the house when I moved here. It worked great for 3 months, then started going out for several hours a week about two months ago.

True was canvassing our neighborhood with a promotion, so I decided to sign up. They installed in a brand new line to my house for this connection. True has been up since it was installed, while ToT still goes out at least once a week for several hours if not overnight. As a matter of fact, it's out right now, went off last night at some point, and I reported the outage this morning. Really happy to have a backup connection now.

SurfRider my home is located about midway between Central Pattaya and Jomtien. I 'telecommute' so it's important to me to have a stable quality connection. The advertised package that I'm paying for is what has been delivered when I do a speed test. As I mentioned since True has been installed, I have not had any problems with the connection (please please please do not let this post jinx me!). Even with VOIP applications it has been rock solid, last week had a 4 hr conference call and not even a single blip. HTH and good luck with your own internet connection.

WaatWang,

Can you say which TRUE service you have ( see link below ) and what were the installation costs, modem cost ( if any ), etc

Is TRUE delivered on a coax TV cable or a regular copper-pair phone line? ( Coax is much more reliable ).

Thanks again in advance for any comments

I also have ToT. I am in View Talay 1 "A". Also in last two months I experience down time about every 4 days. When I call 1100 ToT number usually they fix same day. It is always fixed somewhere in there system as they have never came to condo. Yesterday I went to there office in Pattaya Klang. They told me not to call 1100 number and to use number they gave me. However if I call them it won't get taken care of until next day. I would suggest if you have ToT to use the 1100 number as I seem to get better response. After my year contract is up, I will look into True as ToT sucks.

I have four seperate TOT connections & one CAT connection....CAT rarely if ever has failed in two years, but every TOT connection goes down on a weekly basis, particularly on weekends when its hard to get any service or response.

Anyhow, I think many people have vended their dissatisfaction on TOT, and its good to hear of competitors doing it right. Think I'll switch to True for one connection to give it a go. Would be good if they packaged their TrueVision with a broadband internet connection, but thats too much to hope for!

I hear CAT are now working on a new fibre optic upgrade for their international braodband cable, and as the other companies purchase access to this, hopefully that will improve things for all of us!

Hi SurfRider,

I signed up for the 5MB Premium package so I could get the wireless router. The router was free with a one year contract, but if I want to end the contract early for some reason it's only a B1500 fee, which is the cost of the router. It was advertised as 'free installation' however when they came to install the new line they actually charged us B500. I don't know if this is just something the techs ask for to buy their lunches, but there were about five of them here to do the installation and were very helpful - they even set up the connection on both of our laptops which ToT didn't do, so it was worth it for me. It was installed on a regular phone line.

Really interesting to hear from other people with ToT that it goes down pretty regularly once a week. Mine, too would often go out on Sunday night and be down most of Monday. Same experience with the 1100 line, they respond to that pretty quickly but when it's down on Sunday there are no techs to send out to fix whatever it is they fix. Our ToT was down all day yesterday from Sunday night, and decided to start working again sometime between 6 & 8pm last night. I would have thought all the techs would be done at that hour so maybe it's just some weirdness going on that resolves on its own eventually - who knows? Frustrating, but now happy to have True. :)

Kind regards,

WaatWang

Just signed up for TOT, all works well and the one time I called customer service they fixed the problem in 10 minutes. Apparently my service needed a port opened to get the connection. It's nearly as fast as what I had in Singapore which was a broadband connection. For 500 baht a month it can go down once a week and it's still a great deal. I was paying almost 3000 baht a month in Singapore.

Also there is no need for a specialist to hook it up to your computer, run the CD and that's all there is to it.

hello WaatWang. Yes, My ToT also went out for the same time. Sunday night until Monday night. Just wonder why ToT at Pattaya Klang yesterday while I was at there office couldn't just say it was out all over instead of some run around about not using 1100. Said they were sending someone over today to check it out. Joke!

WaatWang,

Thanks very much for your extensive comments on your experience with TRUE. Assuming the 5Mbps holds true for international access and not only inside Thailand, TRUE sounds like the best option when my CAT contract expires.

Currently, CAT averages about 1.7 Mbps on an advertised 2 Mbps link - today I'm getting 2.06 to New York ( see image below ) , but this is exceptional for CAT.

Gosh. I assume that is for business purpose. I am happy just to have have two (Sophon and TOT).

I just bought a Dual WAN router that has load balancing and failback functions. Happy to discuss that via PM if anyone is interested.
