BANGKOK, 18 June 2010 (NNT) - The Criminal Court has approved the police investigator's request to detain two key anti-government leaders for another 12 days for further investigation.

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) on Friday sought the second detention of Puea Thai Party MPs and core figures of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) Jatuporn Prompan and Karun Hosakul on the charge of terrorism.

As a consequence, the court sentenced both to 12-day detention during 20 June-1 July 2010.

The DSI also opposed bail for Mr Jatuporn, citing his inappropriate action when he led anti-government supporters to rally at the Criminal Court on Tuesday during the court’s deliberation on the detention of another 11 UDD core figures.

The 11 anti-government leaders recently put in police custody for 12 days for terrorism comprise Mr Veera Musikapong, Mr Nattawut Saikua, Mr Kwanchai Praipana, Mr Wiphuthalaeng Phatthanaphumthai, Mr Yosawarit Chuklom, Mr Nisit Sinthuprai, MD Weng Tochirakarn, Mr Korkaew Pikulthong, Mr Bhumkitti Sukchindathong, Mr Sombat Makthong and Mr Amnat Intarachote.

The decision came after the DSI chief accused Mr Jatuporn of leading anti-government supporters to pressure the Criminal Court on Tuesday during its consideration on the detention and bail of 11 other anti-government leaders.

The DSI investigators on Friday sought the second detention of 2 core leaders of the anti-government United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) for terrorism, which consisted of Mr Jatuporn and Mr Karun Hosakul.

Red-Shirt Leader Denies Suspect's Link to Thaksin

A core leader of the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship said a close aide to late Major-General Khattiya Sawasdipol, who was recently arrested in Si Sa Ket province by the police, did not confess to any wrongdoing or to receiving money from a close associate to the fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, to fund violent incidents during the most recent red-shirt protest in Bangkok.

Jatuporn Phrompan, a red-shirt leader, said a lawyer representing the red-shirt protesters told him that Jacharat Kongsuwan, wanted for violating the emergency decree, did not admit to receiving money from a female associate of Thaksin Shinawatra on behalf of Seh Daeng to stage violent incidents.

His statement contradicts a statement made by the Department of Special Investigation which claimed the opposite.

Jatuporn also remarked that Tharit Pengdit, the DSI director general, seems to be making no progress in finding the culprit to the assassination of Major-General Khattiya Sawasdipol or Seh Daeng.

Jatuporn added that TODAY a lawyer will apply for bail on behalf of DAAD leaders who are in remand. He said he and Pheu Thai MP Karun Hosakul will make a court appearance on August 19.

Red-shirt Leader Plans New Attack on DSI Chief

Pheu Thai Party MP and red-shirt core-leader Jatuporn Prompan has threatened to expose more secret information he claimed related to the director general of the Department of Special Investigation.

Two opposition Pheu Thai MPs Jatuporn Prompan and Karun Hosakul today traveled to the Criminal Court to report themselves on terrorism charges following a court's summoning.

The two were freed on bail, exercising their parliamentary immunity.

Jatuporn insisted he will continue to seek bail for other fellow red-shirt leaders who are being detained at the Bangkok Remand Prison and the Klong Prem Central Prison until the application is approved.

The Court of Appeals earlier granted bail for key red-shirt leader Veera Musikapong after he posted 6 million baht as bond.

He noted next month, Pheu Thai MPs and the anti-government red-shirt group will hold political activities in provinces where the emergency decree had been lifted, starting in the North.

Jatuporn also threatened to reveal secret information about Tharit Pengdit, director general of the Department of Special Investigation, or DSI.

Jatuporn claimed he has new information which, once disclosed, could result in Tharit being removed from his post as the DSI chief.

He added he is in the process of gathering more evidence and will disclose it to the public later.

The red-shirt leader earlier made a cryptic remark, claiming that he is connected with number "161".

In response, Tharit came out to admit that the number 161 refers to a call number of a 50-year-old professional masseuse at Chawala massage palor.

Tharit revealed he often uses her service. He claimed the woman is an expert in traditional therapeutic Thai massage.

The multi-coloured shirts, led by Tul Sithisomwong, on Friday filed a motion supported by 20,800 voters seeking to launch the impeachment proceedings against three Pheu Thai MPs linked to the red shirts.

The three MPs targetted for impeachment are Jatuporn Promphan, Karun Hosakul, and Apinan Wiriyachai.

The motion was lodged at the National Anti-Corruption Commission following a signature campaign to back up the demand for the removal of the three MPs from office.

Methee accuses Chatuporn of threatening him

A former red shirt security chief on Tuesday accused red shirt leader Chatuporn Prompan of threatening him to stop being state witness against the red shirts.

Methee Amornwuttikun alleged that Chatuporn, a Pheu Thai MP, telephoned and called him a traitor to the red shirts movement as he agreed to be witness.

Methee, arrested for illegally possessing weapons, has been under police protection after he agreed to testify against the pro-Thaksin movement. He was speaking after filing a complaint with Department of Special Investigation's chief Tharit Pengdit.

"He (Chatuporn) threatened me and called me a traitor. He wanted me to stop being a state witness against the red shirts movement. I want the DSI to seek a court order to revoke Chatuporn's bail as he violated the bail condition by threatening me," he told reporters.

Chatuporn has granted a bail after surrendering to face a charge of instigating chaos in the country during April and May crisis.

A celebrity member of the red-shirt group, arrested for his aid to the movement, discloses that he has had his life threatened by the group's most outspoken leader and other members of the leadership have divided up a small fortune made during the protests.

Celebrity red-shirt member, actor Methee Amornwuthikul, reported to the Department of Special Investigation, or DSI, today. He told investigators that on October 10, he received a phone call from Pheu Thai MP and red-shirt leader Jatuporn Phrompan threatening his life.

Methee disclosed that he has been marked by the group for cooperating with the DSI. He pointed out, however, that despite being arrested for transporting weapons for the group, he has never publicly commented on the movement or political matters.

The suspect further stated that three of the red-shirt leaders have divided up 68 million baht in donations made to their cause.

He challenged the group to counter his claim by disclosing its finances.

He also spoke of other incidents in which the group's leadership manipulated protesters and gave followers false information.

Jatuporn has, in recent days, come out against Methee, blasting his shifting allegiance from the movement and criticizing his personal choices.

DSI Director-General Tharit Pengdit ordered Methee's testimony recorded for further investigation, but admitted that the actor's claims would have to be verified before any protection could be granted to him.

Puea Thai expels two MPs for serious breach of party’s rules

BANGKOK, 8 June 2010 (NNT) – The executive board of the opposition Puea Thai Party has resolved to expel two of its MPs from membership for voting against the party’s stance in the latest censure debate.

Puea Thai Party Spokesperson Prompong Nopparit yesterday announced the party’s decision to oust two of its members, Second Lieutenant Porapol Adireksan, Saraburi MP, and Jumpoj Boonyai, Sakon Nakhon MP, for violating the party’s rule, absence from meetings, and openly joining other parties’ activities. Last week, both MPs cast their no-confidence votes in the opposite direction of Puea Thai Party’s resolution in grilling the government.

Meanwhile, the other two Puea Thai Party-list MPs Somboon Wanchaithanawong and Nikom Chaokittisopon, who also face similar accusations, are being probed by the party’s committee. Both MPs will be summoned to clarify themselves before handed with verdicts.

Red-shirt witness says he was threatened by Jatuporn

A red-shirt protester who is now a state witness claimed yesterday that he had been threatened by prominent red-shirt leader Jatuporn Promphan, who he said was aware of the alleged skimming of Bt68-million donations from protesters.

The claim by Methee Amornwuthikul triggered a furious counter-attack from Jatuporn, also an opposition Pheu Thai MP, who dismissed as "stupid" the allegations by "a man who has betrayed red-shirt fighters and the dead".

Methee yesterday met Department of Special Investigation (DSI) director-general Tharit Pengdit at the agency's office to file a complaint against Jatuporn. After a 15-minute meeting, Methee told reporters that Jatuporn had phoned him and threatened to assault him unless he stopped acting as a state witness in the terrorism cases against red-shirt leaders.

"He called me a traitor," Methee told the press conference.

Methee also said he had requested the DSI to cancel any privileges Jatuporn might have.

Jatuporn, who led the red-shirt rally in Bangkok earlier this year, is charged with terrorism and inciting unrest in connection with the ensuing riots and arson. However, immunity as MP is keeping him out of jail.

Methee also said Jatuporn was one of the three red-shirt leaders managing the Bt68-million donations collected during the recent political rally. He said the money had been embezzled and the culprit had escaped to Malaysia.

"If there is no cheating, evidence should be produced to prove that," Methee said.

At the Pheu Thai headquarters yesterday, Jatuporn dismissed Methee's claim, saying he had never phoned him.

"I saw him at the protest site and he asked to appear on stage. But I have never talked to him once," Jatuporn said.

He also denied alleged involvement in skimming the donations. He said the amount was not Bt68 million as claimed, but it was actually "just Bt37 million". The red-shirt leader said the money was used to cover the cost of holding the rally for 68 days.

Jatuporn said that contrary to general perception that some red-shirt leaders had made a lot of money from the protest, "in fact it's the betrayers abandoning the party and deceiving the red shirts who got rich".

The opposition MP also rejected Methee's thinly-veiled allegation that the MP had an extramarital affair "on the beach". Appearing angry, Jatuporn said: "I won't do that sordid thing."

He also said, "I wonder how Methee will be able to walk on the street" after testifying against the red shirts.

DSI chief Tharit said Methee had insisted about getting a threatening call from Jatuporn. He said DSI officials would further investigate to determine whether the claim was true.

Methee joined the red-shirt protest during Songkran 2009 when he made a threat against Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's life. He made headlines again later that year when he punched a Pheu Thai official from Surat Thani who sought payment from the party at its headquarters.

Methee was arrested in April at the height of the red-shirt rally. His vehicle was found to be carrying weapons, some of which including a Tavor assault rifle seized from soldiers overpowered by red-shirt protesters.

The anti-government Red Shirt Guard Leader has been drawing a government salary since June 2009, when Jatuporn had him appointed, so that's 16 months he's been continuing to get paid with tax money.

A Democrat MP member on the same Jatuporn House Committee, somehow, thinks that is wrong and would like to see that the Guard Leader at least stops getting paid with the people's money.... what with him being a terrorist fugitive and all.

He feels that, ideally, that the wanted criminal should also be removed from his governmental position and his already-paid salary returned.

He plans to bring all of this up at the next House Committee meeting, which is being held today.

Lastly, he requested Jatuporn attend today's meeting as he has not been attending them on a regular basis and the Democrat probably thinks this issue is of at least a bit of importance.

If we're lucky, we might even get to hear what Jatuporn has to say about his involvement in this matter.

While awaiting news for today's House Committee meeting regarding the paid Red Shirt Guard Leader on the government payroll, I find the news in the other paper that ANOTHER anti-government Red Shirt (this time not a Guard Leader, but a full-on Red Shirt Leader), Wiphuthalaeng Pattanaphumthai, is ALSO an employee of the government as an official adviser to Pheu Thai Party MP and Deputy House Speaker Apiwan Wiriyachai.

Here he is (second right) with fellow Red Shirt Leaders Nattawut, Weng, and Veera as he is currently incarcerated at the Bangkok Remand Prison on terrorism charges:

The House of Representatives secretariat has confirmed he was hired in February 2008 and again in October 2009 on year-long contracts and paid a government salary to work as an adviser to the Pheu Thai Party high-up Apiwan.

The same Democrat MP involved with exposing Jatuporn's shenanigans is again highlighting that perhaps this second case of an anti-government government employee is also a bit amiss.

He is hoping that Apiwan will not re-nominate him to his advisory position this year for another contract.

Democrat Exposes Red-shirt Leader's Parliamentary Job

A Democrat MP called on the Deputy House Speaker to return the salary paid to a red shirt core figure whom he appointed as a parliamentary staff member, alleging his decision is not appropriate as the appointee was charged with being accessory to the terror attacks during the recent political unrest.

Democrat MP for Bangkok Watchara Petchthong said red shirt key element Wiputhalaeng Patthanaphumthai, who is still being detained at the Bangkok Remand Prison, has been paid a monthly salary of 10,000 baht by Parliament since February 1 until now as a member of the advisory staff for Deputy House Speaker from Pheu Thai Party Apiwan Wiriyachai.

Watchara said the salary given to Wiputhalaeng is from the people's taxes so Apiwan must refund the amount to Parliament.

He also questioned whether the appointment of such a radical person was a proper decision.

The Democrat MP also advised Apiwan to separate himself from rioters or terrorist suspects or the image of Parliament will be tainted.

Watchara also said he will no longer talk about his remark made yesterday on the dubious appointment of chief red shirt guard Aree Krainara by Pheu Thai party list MP Jatuporn Prompan as an adviser for the House's panel on mass communications and political development.

Watchara said the chairman of the panel Kraisak Choonhawan, who is Democrat party list MP, has notified him that Aree has already been removed from the list of its staff employed in this fiscal year.

However, Aree, red shirt core leader Nutthawut Saikua, who is also still held at the Bangkok Remand Prison, and Wan Yoobamrung, son of Pheu Thai MP chief Chalerm Yoobamrung, were all on the 2008 list of persons entitled for royal decorations.
