What a waste of police resources but then again why not, people burn down the city, and the police turn a blind eye.

AND terrorise International airports and maintain Cabinet Posts!

the people who got to pay 1ooo baht fine, are the one's probable who did not pay the bribe directly to the police men, for sure

Wow, what a waste of resources. The Thai Government have so many more problems to attend to, like addressing people's distrust of government institutions. First they banned my favorite stream site MyP2P, then the banned parts of Softpedia and now they are picking up gamblers who are, on average wagering ฿400. I fully expect to see Abhisit playing a Saaw whilst Krungthep burns.

Everyone, every country, every government, every policeforce etc, simply has to have their priorities... an average of 10 dollars worth of gambling money seized from 259 people! That it? That the priority? Not deep-rooted corruption nor the seemingly irrepairable rift in society? TEN dollars 'seized' from people who fancy a flutter on the World Cup!! Good one, that, lads!!!

259 people found gambling across 76 provinces, or 3.4 people per province. Makes you wonder why the BIB bother.

Still, it's a better success rate than the Customs Department's record of finding 31 drug smugglers out of more than 10 million passengers at Suvarnabhumi in 2009.

thailand, will they ever understand ???

make it legal... earn tax and profit on it ... open some casino's ...

is it worse than forced prostitution / phedofiles / drug dealers / gangs ???

Not to mention the fact that each week, thousands of middle and upper class Thais gamble millions of baht at the two Royal horse racing grounds in Bangkok (and I belive in Chang Mai).

As always in the land of the people with two-faces, there is one rule for the haves and one for the have-nots, perpetuated by an elite class of Police, Army and bureaucrats. No wonder there is dissent !

Is there anything more contemptible than a government that attempts to stamps out one form of gambling yet encourages another?

Thailand attempts to stamp out all forms of gambling yet actively sponsors and supports a state lottery.

How hypocritical can you get?

The people can spew all their cash on gambling as long as the state gets a cut - is that the message?

Clearly it is.

Why is clamping down on illegal activities a waste of resources. If they didn't do anything you'd probably complain as well. What would you like the police to do? Ignore crime or catch the criminals?

The police do ignore crime esspecially if against a farang, I have experienced this to my great cost. They are nothing but well entreched parasites, get real man open your eyes.

So a start to stop this infantile behaviour would be for the government to come up with a sensibly thought out law. Given the lack of social responsibility amongst the vast majority of the population it makes sense to make efforts to stop the very poor from gambling their wages away instead of looking after their family. However a blanket ban on gambling is not the way forward since it just drives everything underground and in any case those that want to gamble don't give two hoots for the law since either they perceive it as a stupid law or just plain do what they want anyway (a typical Thai trait masked by social customs). If the rule of law is to gain any headway one first has to make sure the laws are sensible and at least in some part fair. Thailand is not alone in the stupidity of the people making the laws, I think we could all come up with a host of stupid laws from elsewhere in the world - the EU is famous for them such as designating a size for what could be called a banana for sale I seem to recall, and the UK for its host of absolutely daft laws - the swathe of health and safety laws being high of the list. It strikes me some brainbox has a good idea which is then taken over by idiots and do gooders to turn into a law to make everyone's life more complicated and line the pockets of those in the know.

Out of 70 million plus people, they caught 259, good result, well done, have a holiday.

agree with most of the comments here, the police did a pretty bad job.

why the government don't send the army in do distribute its favorite kind of medicine to take care at the people? gambling is a cancer.

There must be a lack of tourists to ticket for BS motor-scooter violations.

Got me ysterday, naughty I was, fancy daring to ride my motorbike in the right hand lane, 100 did the business...

I don't know what the big deal is. Thai's gamble year round on anything that moves I was led to believe.

Reminds me of Songkran and the drunk driving crackdown.

What time is the lottery numbers posted this afternoon btw?

Okay what is the problem people have with BiB??

As we now franchise in Thailand is big business, and it looks like that manny people do not understand that this is the case for the thai police aswell.

You have to now that, to get a policejob you will have to buy yourself in.(the so called entrance payment)

If they have done this, they will be provided with the company's uniform and logo, same as all the franchise company's do.

The next step is to get your own nice little boot on some bussy street corners, again with company logo.

The headoffice will provide their franchisees with the so called vouchers,so the customer's can do their payments to the franchisees usualy in thailand 200/500 thai bath

As it is normal practise to pay for the membership,( the so called profitshare) (%?) the royal thai police franchisees is required to do so as well.

And last but not least you have to understand that the royal thai police franchisees is much more anxiosly about your health and well being(driving with no helmet, driving to fast, etc, etc) than the one's who sell you unhealthy food or overpriced bad quality product''s:Thaiflag:

<FONT size=4 face="Comic Sans MS">let me see if I Got this straight.. The wonderful boys in brown can't stop all the garbage that just went on in Bangkok, but they have managed to nab 259 people for gambling on the world cup. Does this just about cover it or what?

What on earth does this line mean ?

I mean, it is in the form of a question, so what might the answer be ?

And what hangs on whatever answer is given, if it is logically answerable ?

Clarification invited.

Guessing: you believe that all the 4 phenomena cited are worse than gambling, (?)

and...so what ? .... the police do nothing about them so should do nothing about gambling?...

but that's not true is it ? or....

Can't someone in Bangkok put their cat up a tree or someone make a run for it from a bank with a bag of swag?

Having seen the BIB try to undertake some arrests a month or so back, I'd guess they would even fuc_k up rescuing a cat from a tree.

That one is easy, you just shoot it down.

What?

Right, the cops cannot stop people from burning town halls or Bangkok and cannot arrest violent demonstrators but can they haul in the gamblers! They cannot stop the tuk-tuks from blocking the Port at Phuket They can also quickly stop a demonstration by blind lottery vendors.

They should all hang their heads in shame. Useless group from top to bottom.

Nahkbin

Of course they could not stop the blockade. They did not even go there! Did not want to fight the mob. Pathetic.

The BIB nab 259 people for gambling..........now what were the odds on that.

They said 1000 baht fine.....but just like week I can confirm that several Thais were arrested near where I live for playing cards...........the police demanded 4000 bhat from each of them to get them out of jail or one week in jail.

4000 times 259 = 1,036,000 baht..................not a bad take if they asked for that much money.
