webfact
Thai police arrest 1,000 gamblers for World Cup betting BANGKOK (AFP) - More than 1,000 punters in the Thai capital have been arrested in a crackdown on illegal gambling during the World Cup, police said Wednesday. Bangkok's force has arrested 56 bookmakers or their associates and 1,156 gamblers who have made bets totalling 3.4 million baht (105,000 dollars). Thai courts have so far handed jail sentences ranging from one to six months to 24 gamblers, although most of the sentences have been suspended, the police statement said. Most forms of gambling are outlawed in the kingdom but it remains popular, despite the threat of a 1,000 baht fine or jail term of up to one year for having a flutter on the tournament, which began on June 11 in South Africa. Thai police have set up special centres around the country to stamp out World Cup gambling, which the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce estimates will top 37.0 billion baht this year. -- (c) Copyright AFP 2010-07-

That must be what the official police report said; I expect there was a much higher amount in cash, but it probably found its way into the police pockets before the police report was written. But its good this 610 baht of illicit gambling money was taken off the streets; otherwise, it might have ended up buying some noodle and fish ball soup. Couple more raids like this and the police may reach a couple thousand baht "officially" confiscated.

lonewolf99
"Thai police have set up special centres around the country to stamp out World Cup gambling, which the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce estimates will top 37.0 billion baht this year." How do you even begin to calculate this wild ass guess and what sort of formula do these University types use to get the answer....if you give a round figure like 40 billion it looks like a guess but an odd ball number like 37 ...means you got it right ? And where are these "special centres" ? might they be a room in a "Police Station" ? complete and utter b*ll*ks IMO....

salty
It is shocking the way these perverts surface every 4 years. I hope the various police districts are keeping a league table with the top 8 making it to the 1/4 finals. I bet err think Thong Lo will make the last 8.
