US returns GSP rights to 9 Thai goods

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The US has decided to return Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) rights to nine different types of Thai goods from 2010 to 2011; however, the privileges for passenger car radial tyres (PSR) and seasoned minced prawn have been cut instead.

According to Commerce Minister Pornthiva Nakasai, Thailand has once again been granted the GSP privilege for nine types of goods, enabling them to enjoy 0% tariff. The GSP will be in effect from now on until the US revises it again in the middle of next year.

The nine goods are fresh-cut orchids, fresh durian, dried and processed papaya, dried tamarind, seasoned corn, cooking sauce, wet blue buffalo hide, and porcelain household utensils.

Another piece of good news is the GSP privileges for silver ornament will remain in force although exports of the products to the US have exceeded the level specified for the past five years.

However, the rights for passenger car radial tyres (PSR) and seasoned minced prawn products have been cut due to the fact that exports of both products have far exceeded the limit set by the US. Admittedly, the cut will make it difficult for exporters of the two products to compete in the world market as they will be required to shoulder import tariffs of 5% and 4% respectively.
