DonGato Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 How do you "confiscate" an elephant.... You put him on a motor cycle!!!!!! hummm.... you let him know it's under arrest...
tryptamine Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 Maybe then 500 baht fine for operating an elephant without license, and another 200 baht for driving one without a helmet? Btw, saw elephants on the streets a few times last month, but I'm in Chiang Mai. Still do not think the streets of central tourist areas here are nice place for those beasts. :-(
BRichards Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 I love elephants and i would fly there from Hong Kong just to see them walk by. BR
harrry Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 Maybe a trunk call to tell them to get off the streets.
hughben Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 Wish they'd do the same for the primates and snakes and eagles. That or tourists stop giving those pureyors of animal cruelty money. Yes totally agree.

jonsalat Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 I lived in Bangkok for 13 years between '85 and '98. Even then they had a policy of not letting Elephants and Mahouts into the city, but that never deterred them. Somehow they need a way to look after these beautiful beasts, and if that means coming to the city, so be it. At least the Bangkokians feel they have made merit by not only feeding them, but also walking underneath them. Now, apparently there are sanctuaries for them, but obviously that isn't working as it should, otherwise the elephants wouldn't still be coming. If I was back in BKK and saw an elephant, and decided that it needed to be fed I would be only too happy to offer food, and stuff the consequences!!!

Maybe you and a few others missing some information in several posts within this thread. Indeed there are places where elephants can be given to and have a new home. A home where they can live quite naturally. http://www.elephantnaturepark.org is such a place. Everyone can go there, stay for weeks if u have the time and see by your own eyes which is the better way... the city (quote ionsalat "...so be it"?????????? or the naturally environment!!!!!) Better to support these places, where they have full treatment including medical care instead of supporting irresponsible people who accept various diseases by taking them to inappropriate places like this city...
zappalot Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 very slowly server thus double post, this one may be deleted...
Deeral Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 Don't hold your breath! It simply CAN"T happen - it's just another pointless piece of Thai law enforcement dreamed up by some buffoon with nothing to do. These animals have to be relocated -THey can't just be "stopped"- they have to be placed "in care" elsewhere - this costs money - Ihaven't heard of a single penny being put up for this, so it won'thappen. THe elephants - which by the way areusually rented out to the people who take them round - will simplyend up in another part of town or a nearby location until the "heat"dies down and they will resume their activities.
