Vanity - ไร้สาระ

Featured Replies

The other day a poster mentioned 'vanity' as ไร้สาระ 'rai-saa-ra'.

Now, Becker also defines 'vanity' as ว่างเปล่า 'waag-bplao'

and หยิงยโส 'ying-ya-so.

Just wondering what these other two refer to?

Cheers,

บุญมี

The poster you mention was greenwanderer defending himself from my charge of being an imposter, a fake farang, I don't know why he mentioned vanity and said it was meaningless, absurd, ridiculous, senseless or lacking in substance- some of the meanings of ไร้สาระ I've seen 'vain' translated as หลงตัวเอง or ขี้เก๊ก- a poser,

หยิ่งยโส could perhaps be 'arrogant', don't listen to others, think you're always right, whilst ว่างเปล่า is more like empty, nothing in there.

Any thoughts from Mr Yoot or our esteemed moderator?

first word that comes to my head is "nonsense" not vanity..

rai being negative or useless.. sara being news or information..

That the full expression means 'nonsense', often uttered as an exclamation, is correct, but your analysis of the component parts is a bit off the mark.

ไร้ means 'lacking'; 'devoid of'

สาระ means 'essence', 'substance'

I think vanity could only be construed as "khwaam waang plaao" if we understand vanity in the sense of 'doing something in vain', not as the more common meaning of 'the quality or state of being narcissistic, overly preoccupied with one's own looks'.

I've heard หยิ่ง (haughty, snooty) before, but never in the combination with ยโส so I am not sure if the addition changes the basic meaning of หยิ่ง and I don't have any dictionaries here to consult, but I would not be surprised if our esteemed bannork is right. :o

As for ไร้สาระ meaning 'vanity', it seems a bit far fetched to me, but I guess it MIGHT work in the same sense as 'doing something in vain'. (Not sure though).

I had a look for the post you quoted - and as I understand it, greenwanderer does not mean that vanity means ไร้สาระ , he means that vanity in itself is nonsense - or perhaps 'devoid of substance', 'superficial'.

I didn't have notes to check here in the middle of Africa .. sorry about that. If I had checked my dictionary for the exact meaning of the words then I would have come up with the same as you.. as I said these are the words that came to my head and seemed pretty close to the mark.. :o

In my post I implied greenwanderer was being a hypocrite คนถือสากปากถือศีล พูดอย่างทำอย่าง มารยา I don't know why he introduced the idea of vanity.

A poser indeed!

A Thai word can be the meaning of many English words , whilst an English word can have many meanings in Thai. But which word should be used it depends on the content and situation.

‘ vanity ‘ from a English-Thai dictionary means ความหยิ่งยโส,ความทะนงตัว,ความภูมิใจในตัวเองมากเกินไป,ความว่างเปล่า,ความไร้สาระ,การไร้คุณค่า,สิ่งที่ไร้สาระ,ความไร้ประโยชน์,โต๊ะเครื่องแป้ง,กระเป๋าถือเล็กๆ,กระเป๋าถือเล็กๆสำหรับใส่เครื่องสำอาง

From Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary

van•ity /vnti/ noun (pl. -ies)

1 (disapproving) too much pride in your own appearance, abilities or achievements. (ความหยิ่งยโส,ความทะนงตัว,ความภูมิใจในตัวเองมากเกินไป,ความหลงตัวเอง)

2 (literary) the quality of being unimportant, especially compared with other things that are important. (ความไร้สาระ,การไร้คุณค่า,สิ่งที่ไร้สาระ,ความไร้ประโยชน์ and ความว่างเปล่า in the meaning of meaninglessness)

3 vanities [pl.] behaviour or attitudes that show people’s vanity: Politics is too often concerned only with the personal vanities of politicians. (ลักษณะนิสัยของคนที่หยิ่ง ,ยโส, อวดดี , ถือทิฐิ)

4 (also vanity table) [C] (NAmE) = dressing table (โต๊ะเครื่องแป้ง)

When หยิ่งยโส are together , it emphasizes the meaning of the word. Sometimes ‘โอหัง’ is combined too. All mean ‘ to be arrogant ‘ : to think that they are better than others( knowledge, position, rank, etc.), always look down others and don’t listen to others (warning, suggestions ,etc)

ความว่างเปล่า normally means ‘emptiness’ , ‘meaninglessness’ , ‘nothing’ .

For example;

A : What have you got from reading this article? คุณได้อะไรจากการอ่านบทความนี่มั่ง (บ้าง)

B : Nothing. (It’s meaningless) ความว่างเปล่า

In my post I implied greenwanderer was being a hypocrite คนถือสากปากถือศีล พูดอย่างทำอย่าง มารยา I don't know why he introduced the idea of vanity.

I think that poster might want to say ‘ The vanity is nonsensical’ ,from his post about acne . :o
