metisdead
Contact AAA and get an international driving license: http://www.aaa.com/vacation/idpf.html
lopburi3
You must have a valid drivers license and as you plan to live here it will need to be a Thai drivers license. Until that is made you may use your US license. There is no such thing as an international drivers license. And an IDP (basically a translation) is not required for a US License as it is in English which is understood and accepted here.

Mario2008
If you rent a car or own a car, read the insurance policy. You might find that you need a Thai drivers license to be covered.

Mario2008
There is no such thing as an international drivers license. Correct. It is called an International Driving Permit. Regardless of if you call it a permit or a license, no country is allowed to decide for other countries that their drivers license gives you the right to drive in their country. Most will regocnise an other countries driving license, under conditions. But the drivers license doesn't have international status. Edit: Thailand did not sign the convention in which other countries driving permits are recognized. That is probably why you are not insured in Thailand without a Thai drivers license.
