Can you recommend one? In Thailand would be great but outside ok too i suppose.

Do they have loads of ads / large amounts of disk space?

I don't expect to have a lot of traffic i just want something up there

Try a google search on 'free web hosting'.

I can't find any in Thailand but they would probably be hiding behind a Thai language front page which will be very effective at keeping me out

You will get what you pay for.

I pay 25 USD per year for 100meg space and 1gig/month traffic , but I only use it to post photos for my mum to look at.

geocities has been around for along while and will allow you to have a non commercial website for free but with webads on the page.
