ทอดถอนหายใจ

Featured Replies

The following sample sentence is in Lexitron for the word ลุ้น:

ผมลุ้นจนทอดถอนหายใจเพื่อให้เขามีทางได้ทำความฝันให้เป็นจริง

I am having difficulty understanding the phrase "จนทอดถอนหายใจ" in this context.

I am rooting for him to find a way to turn hisdreams into reality __________ .

I am wondering if the phrase "จนทอดถอนหายใจ" implies, "with every breath I take" or "to my dying breath" or "as much as I am able".

Any thoughts? Thanks.

(I just saw that Softwater posted this question in the Pak Nam forum about this time last year with scant response. Perhaps this is not a common expression.)

s/o's explanation is that it's a focused breathing in and out as if to say 'let it be true, let it be so'.

a slightly idiomatic translation might be " I was hoping with all my might that his dream might come true"

hope this helps a little

How about? - (breathe) a sigh of relief - as a general translation of the phrase, however putting it in to the context of that sentence is beyond me.

If you look up หายใจ you will see that it isn't only 'breathing' หมกมุ่นไปในทางใดทางหนึง so I guess this just means 'single minded support, to the utmost' or similar.
