MaenamMtb
Hi Before I drive all the way to Nathon, does anyone know exactly what Samui immigration requires to obtain the papers necessary to take to the licensing centre? I'm buying a car shortly and a I believe I need work permit, passport photos but not sure if I need some sort of certificate of residency. Any help appreciated. BigC
ok. this is a simple answer u need a passport with any up to date visa. then you go to immergration in natong. u take passport pictures with u. if u not have u can buy the, at immgeration. then u go in u tell the immergration officere u want to make paper for buy car. they will ask for 500 baht. then u take that to transport office. warning the paper expires after 30 days. so u had better purchase within 30 days or u will have to buy another paper gurantee which will cost u anothere 500 baht, it is not that hard. if u buying car from a car dealer if u make the immergration paper. they can normally do the transfeer for u. if u buy second hand then u have to go with the seller to transprt office with the gurantee paper and the owner. then just follow there instructions. Rooo
Does anyone know if you buy vehicle from out of provience can you change registration plates at Samui's transport office or you must do it in Suratthani, Also anyone know where location of transport office in Suratthani. cheers. KTD, bought my car in BKK, had to go to Surat for plate change. You take all your paper work to the counter (all the relevant paper work same as licence), they will issue a slip & tell you to come back in 2-3 days. Go back present slip & old plates, fill paper work to go over Pits (inspection).Proceed to pits, they stamp paper work, back to counter 2 or 3 not sure, they give you a paper with a time on it, 20 minutes from memory. They call you & hand you new plates & registration sticker.
NHJ
unfortunately they don't issue license plate in koh samui, so you'll either have to go to surat or use one of the service of agent who can do it for you. i personnaly use the insurance office of viriyah in front of the ptt in chaweng, just beside the yamaha dealer other agents are in front of tesco, you'll notice the writting regarding insurance and transfer ownership on the main window. and then you have dan auto in maenam, this thai guy has lived in texas so language barrier doesn't apply there. oh i forgot something regarding the transfer of ownership, IF the vehicule is older than 5 years you need to get a certificate of "conformity" from usually dan auto Edited August 6, 2010 by NHJ

MaenamMtb
Ok thanks everyone, I can confirm that I took my work permit, passport and two photos and it cost 500 baht. Took about 20 minutes. The 30 day expiry is also handy info. Cheers
