PaddyThai
Appreciate that. Last time I flew Thai airways from BKK to KK it cost only about 2,000 baht. Bit more now. Looking at feasibility of taking VIP bus or Taxi but that might be exhausting.
jgm005
Air Asia use to fly to Khon Kaen some time ago but pulled out. As the other poster said your only option is Thai Air
bifftastic
Here's a bus timetable, the 1st class has only 21 seats on the bus, fully reclining, tv screens etc. bit of a long journey but comfortable and under 500 baht http://www.nca.co.th/runway.php
TerryLH
Nakhonchai Air bus has service BKK to KKC up until about midnight. It looks like they have a bus leaving at least hourly, with late evenings about every 30 minutes. They have their own terminal, not far from Morchit. It's just over 6 hours. www.nca.co.th

Lite Beer
As said Thai are the only airline. Alternatives are Nakhonchai Air. The first class bus is excellent. Train. Fly to Udon with Air Asia or Nok Air. Thai Air fares.
citizen33
As mentioned, Thai is the only option. At least the price is now a tad more reasonable. It had risen to a minimum of B3200 one way, but has now dropped to B2230 for the cheapest one way tickets.
