Diabetic Alert Dog

An amazing phenomenon; the British Labrador, saving lives - trained in the USA - Mississippi

I did some research about Diabetes in Thailand and just discovered that almost 5% or more than 3 million people in Thailand* are suffering from Diabetes. That's a very high number and rising for a country where Diabetes was one of the lowest in the world!

The son of my sister and his wife have a boy, now 11 years old who was born with one of the most severe types of Diabetes 1.

It has been an unbelievable difficult job for the parents to raise him since the boy had to be blood-checked many many times per 24 hours, day-in-day out for many years now. He is now able to inject himself if necessary, when his father, mother or teacher are not around.

Since a short while they now have a young dog, a lovely British Labrador**, trained in a special facility and training center in Mississippi/US who walks with him where ever he goes, sleeps in his room (door open for fast alert by parents), goes with him to school, sports....literally everywhere, including restaurants, and even in airplanes I believe but I have to double check that.

In America, restaurants have to admit the dog since he has special papers, showing it is a life-saving dog.

The British Labrador is known for his fantastic scenting ability and scents if the levels of the boy are too high or low and reacts immediately.

That is an absolute necessity since only a blood-check can tell whether the level is either too -RISKY- high or too low but the dog scents it immediately WITHOUT an eventual blood-check.

The Diabetic Alert Dog has a special bag on his back mentioning "Service Dog" with all necessary equipment (injection needles etc) and medication.

"Sunni", the Labrador was "delivered" by plane from Mississippi to Colorado by his special woman trainer; it seems that mostly women can bring the patience and affection to train Labradors for Diabetic patients.

Truly amazing.

Anybody heard of this kind of trained Diabetic Alert Dogs in Thailand already ?

Wildrose DAD

The Wildrose Diabetic Alert Dog™ is an exciting new tool in diabetes management. Each dog is trained to notify owners with Type 1 diabetes of low and high blood glucose levels, thereby allowing them to promptly make necessary corrections to avert the episode or lessen its severity. A hypoglycemic attack can lead to a seizure, coma, or death making these well-trained dogs true lifesavers. The Diabetic Alert Dog's performance can result in tighter glycemic control which decreases the likelihood of devastating, long-term complications including kidney failure, retinaphy, neuropathy, heart disease, etc. Through our intensive, thorough training program designed for the dogs and their handlers, these exceptional Labradors are changing the lives of people with Type I diabetes across the United States. Note:

Today my sister informed me that the dog "Sunni", her grandson has now, is reacting immediately once he scents that the blood glucose level is dropping fast, even before the boy or his parents notice anything.

Sunni is with the boy 24/7 -day-and-night-

It is very important that the dog also sleeps in the same room as the boy since the boy can get a hypoglycemic attack, causing him to pass out in a coma and eventually die if there is no immediate help for him; the dog is than also not able to wake the boy by barking or making nervous sounds because the boy is totally unconscious.

"Sunni" the young Labrador is trained to run to the bedroom of the parents and wake them up.

Before they had the dog they had to be alert every 2 hours (!), checking his blood glucose levels, causing serious lacks of sleep for the parents and this already since 11 years....:(

What a wonder they have these dogs nowadays, savings lives.
