Dear folks

How long before applicant can begin work in UK if successful? I wish to include a supporting letter from a prospective employer for my wife regarding a cleaning job. Is this wise?

The position is legitimate and the employers know they may be contacted for details regading this. I heard however a new settlement immigrant can not begin work in the UK until 6 months into their stay.

Any advice on how to include our intentions in the visa would be appreciated.

Many Thanks.

It is my understanding that they can work immediately. What point would there be in making someone wait 6 months ?

Immediately is the correct answer, just need to attend meeting at the local Job centre and take passport. A temporary note and NI number will be issued so one can start work. A NI card will be sent out within 28 days. Who ever told you that they have to wait 6 months has been misadvised themselves. It depends on the type of visa.

If a fiance or proposed civil partner then they cannot work until after the marriage/civil partnership and they have FLR.

If a spouse/unmarried partner/civil partner then they can work immediately.

It is the employer who allocates the temporary NI number, not the job centre. They will allocate the deductions to this until the employee receives their actual NI number and then transfer these across.
