Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will lodge a defamation lawsuit against Democrat MP Sirichoke Sopha over his public statement linking Thaksin with reported arms smuggling into Sri Lanka, legal adviser Noppadol Pattama said yesterday.

Nopppadol said Sirichoke was trying to imply a link between Thaksin and Russian Viktor Bout through a statement that a weaponsloaded aeroplane had landed at Don Meuang Airport in March - the same day Thaksin arrived in Sri Lanka. "Thaksin never knew arms dealer Viktor Bout, either personally or through any business deal, especially in the arms trade," he said.

"He also told me he would never be so evil [as to trade arms]," Noppadol said, before calling on Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to prevent Sirichoke, as a politician, from making such accusations.

Noppadol said he last spoke to Thaksin on Wednesday and that the fugitive was fine but preferred to stay quiet and maintain a lowprofile.

On Tuesday, opposition MP Jatuporn Promphan of the Pheu Thai Party told Parliament that a Russianspeaking person with ties to the government had tried to persuade Bout to claim that Thaksin was behind an incident in March when a cargo plane loaded with weapons was seized at Don Meuang airport.

Jatuporn accused Sirichoke of trying to offer a deal to Bout, who was punished for not cooperating by being handed over to the US authorities to face terrorism charges.

Sirichoke admitted for the first time yesterday he had met with Bout in prison, but only to interview him about "his special interest" in when the cargo of weapons was seized in Thailand - and Thaksin's arrival in Sri Lanka. Media reports in Sri Lanka had linked Thaksin with the arms.

"I wanted to only talk to Bout, whom I know is close to the Ukrainian pilot who flew the plane. Anyway it's good that the matter is now known publicly. So we'll find out who tells lies," he said.

He also contradicted a statement by Bout's wife, who was reportedly present during the interview, that she recorded the conversation and would soon make it public after having it translated into many languages. "Bout's wife and lawyer were not present, and her claim that she had the conversation recorded is hardly possible, as prison rules are against bringing in audio tape recorders," he said.

Asked about the time he met Bout, Sirichoke said it was about noon, and paused when reporters cited a prison record that it was at 4 pm. "I am not quite sure about the time, because my visit was in April," he claimed.

The Corrections Department echoed Sirichoke's statement over recordings, saying that if it existed it would have been done secretly and illegally due to the prison rules.

DirectorGeneral Chartchai Sutthiklom said visitor records did not show Ella Bout and a lawyer had visited the prison at the same time as Sirichoke. "Her statement that she was present during Sirichoke's visit could be based on his misunderstanding, or on her intent to make the issue a political one," he added.

A source at Bangkok Remand Prison, where Bout was held before being transferred to maximumsecurity Bang Khwang after the extradition order last week, denied Nitipoom Yooprom had visited Bout, as he had written in his column. Russianspeaking Nitipoom claimed to have helped with Sirichoke's interview of Bout.

Lak Nitiwawijarn, Bout's lawyer, said the Russian was amused over news reports about his wife's interview recording. Bout will today submit a written request to Abhist and the Bang Khwang prison chief asking for a halt in his extradition to the US.

This time, though, at stake is his international reputation, which is already hanging in the balance following the bloody political violence in April and May.

He is calling for the head of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's aide, Sirichoke Sopha, claiming there is a tape recording featuring Sirichoke's conversation with alleged Russian arms dealer Victor Bout. "In a couple of days, the tape will come out," Jatuporn said.

Earlier, Jatuporn had made another bombshell claim, that Sirichoke went to meet Bout in prison to ask the suspect to implicate Thaksin Shinawatra in international arms smuggling. That allegation and the proclaimed secret tape have further clouded the Bout extradition issue that has placed Thailand awkwardly in between two superpowers, the United States and Russia.

All of a sudden, Victor Bout has become a big part of intertwined international and domestic intrigues spreading from Russia, to North Korea, to Bangkok, to Ukraine, to Sri Lanka and to America. Sirichoke has had a hand in this as well, as his April meeting with Bout is becoming very much politicised and bringing the likes of Sri Lanka into the frame.

The Thai government has tried to fix the initial damage by having Sirichoke admit that he had met Bout out of suspicion that there could be a linkage between the April 10 political violence and the illegal heavy weapons founded on a mysterious multinational aircraft that landed here last December. As a government MP and prime ministerial aide, Sirichoke could get away with that kind of meeting. But he wouldn't if he did what Jatuporn has alleged - tried to force Bout to frame Thaksin.

It would be very naive of Sirichoke to ask a reputedly shrewd foreign suspect to do anything like that. That said, it would be very naive of Jatuporn as well to make such a claim without concrete evidence. Again, Jatuporn's reputation hangs on whether a tape, that could prove him right, does exist.

Sirichoke is in no better shape. His meeting with Bout was apparently based on the fact that the arms-smuggling plane landed in Thailand about the same time Thaksin visited Sri Lanka. Suspicion of a possible link might also have come from attacks on the Sri Lankan president by his rivals, whose challenges for him to come clean on his "dealings" with Thaksin appeared on a few websites.

The issue has provided a considerable distraction as Thailand is caught between Washington and Moscow, both of whom must have been almost equally surprised by the decision of the Thai Appeals Court to overrule the lower court's anti-extradition ruling. And the Thaksin ghost has managed to add to the triangular tension in the form of rumours, again circulated by Jatuporn. The rumours had it that Thailand and Russia, at a secret meeting in Vietnam, discussed a quid pro quo deal in which Thaksin, who reportedly had visited Moscow a few times, would be arrested and swapped with Bout.

Despite the waters being muddied, Bout's extradition issue has become quite a straightforward matter once the Appeals Court made its ruling. Now what is deterring extradition are legal complications caused by additional charges filed by the Americans as a "back-up" plan during the appeal process. There aren't too many political ways to deal with those legal complications, so in a few days things should become clearer.

As the problems with Cambodia have demonstrated, international |diplomacy and domestic politics |are a match-up made in hell. All |parties in Thailand, in this case |represented by Sirichoke and |Jatuporn, must keep that in mind.

The Thai rumor mill is wound up again. Why publish such nonsensical babbling until such time as proof is presented and verified. The reputations of those threatening law suits and those making the accusation would be suspect, just due to their past feats in the political zoo, refereed to as politics. How many times do we have to be subjected to rumors that do not stand up to investigation, unnamed shadow figures, etc?

The recent hypothesis relating low IQ with lack of iodine, thus adding it to various consumables, is probably too late for the adult population. The highly touted university entrance exams may have a much better use as a political office seeker exam. Or, just give the whole bunch a IQ test, mandatory retirement for the bottom 90%, and the system would still be overrun with incompetents.

   The tape comes from bouts wife. She is Russian and probably not much to do with the red shirts. Takes some brain to spot the difference, but if you try maybe you can. As Thaksin and/or the red shirts are framed and blamed for almost everything why it should not the same case this time and the government tried to link Thaksin with that Sri Lanka weapon trade?  As far as i know no country has extradited Thaksin ever despite all the claims by the Thai government and Kasits hissy fits.

The coup

On Friday 13th October 2006 and a half, Thaksin Shinawatra flew to Laos to join and corrupt money from the annual people conference. While Thaksin was at the conference, the people realized that Thaksin had eaten their leftover Tom Yum Kung, as well as stolen over 100 billion baht (25 USD) and some of them,decided to stage a coup. Initially, nobody wanted to join but after they threatened to detonate a bomb destroying all the karaoke bars in Thailand, they had the support of the Cult of the khaki. The generals commanded their cultists to attack the opposers. The opposers quickly bowed down. However, no blood was shed, hence the name "Bloodless coup".

Following the coup, Thaksin fled to the UK, taking the money with him. Instantly, the green glow in every Thai politician's eyes vanished. Something was wrong. Every politician had lost the desire to lead. Without leaders, the country quickly plunged into chaos, causing a recession, making farang leave, and destroying the prostitution industry.

A year later, Thaksin had snuck back into Thailand, and the glow returned. The Ministry of Defense knew that Thaksin was back, this time with an army. The Ministry launched a secret military operation to destroy the secret source of his power: the 100 billion baht. They commissioned two undocumented hilltribe people to bring the money to all the farang to pay for prostitutes. When the hilltribe people came back, they harvested their organs. The money was soon spent, and the economy also got a boost. Thaksin's power was gone, but his army still lurks in the mountains of the North, waiting..

Ah, but the Nation will carry it, and if its news in the papers then websites post it up Jatuporn is just following a grand tradition ion Thai politics - say what you will about Sondhi - I was impressed, highly iompressed with his mystical conspiracy theories used against Thaksin (Robe Ceremony, Erawan Shrine)and the conspiracy theory for the non superstitious, the 'Finland plot'.

All linked Thaksin to plotting to overthrow the monarchy, the greatest crime in this country and all of them nothing but outright lies. lots of people believed the congental liar. There is no downside to making outrageous defamations of character.

Looks like the doubts expressed earlier were well justified, which was really not much of a stretch given Jatuporn's proclivity for spouting falsehoods.
