Nationwide Atm Exchange Rate

Recommended Posts

i am in trouble right now with Nationwide over a few pounds overdrawn on my ATM card. You cant get a online balance in LOS so went over a few pounds as their systems wont stop you going overdrawn EVEN  if you have specified that your account should be unable to overdraw.

Now they have hit me with a 15-00 penalty , and another 15-00 on top of that

so i am now 30 in arrears due to their fault.

i have spoken to the manageress of my branch and waiting to hear back.

SO DONT overdraw on your account .its hard to know precisely what you have on balance with no online balance in LOS.

This info is wrong.

I don't know why Buff-horns has difficulty, but I can access all my Nationwide accounts online while in Thailand.

A few months ago, I had to draw more than my daily limit, so had to draw cash on my nationwide credit card as well. I was able to transfer money online to clear the credit card balance.

maybe it was on certain ATMs or maybe a downtime on their systems but i couldnt get any online balances at a variety of ATMs and went a few pounds overdrawn despite telling them i didnt want any overdraft facility.

The manageress told me that their systems could not give an accurate online balance

overseas .,and are likely to let me go overdrawn !

But after complaining they cancelled the penalty charges on this occasion.

Sorry Buff-horns, there seems to be some confusion here.

You cannot access your balance online at an ATM, you have to access it via the internet. You have to get online banking facilities and access with a password.

No...Sorry wrong here....You can do a balance check on ATMs in LOS.

Stick your card in machine and if you have lets say £1000 in your Flex a/c it will show you a bal of =(today)=73,300 bt....I have been using mine for at least 10 years now and although it dosnt work in all ATMs i have never had any problems with them.

As said in my earlier threads wifes nieces have cards (Sam .Prac)and she made sure that they know how to double check balances before any withdrawel again never a problem..and about 3 years now..

Internet good for transfer/ paying bills etc.... :o

The ATM at Bkk Bank Kad Suan Kaew Chiang Mai won't let you check a Nationwide balance before you draw any money but will tell you your balance in Baht after you've drawn some cash! :o

Yes, I've got the blue Flex account card. As long as it tells me a balance sometime in the proceedings I don't mind :o

  • 2 weeks later...
I have compared it with others...RBS-HSBC-Hali-Smile..etc. and have found that the difference on say a £300 withdrawel can be anything between £10 and £15 quid. :D

I even contacted these banks and asked why they cant do the same as Nationwide but always get the same body swerve answer.banking codes ,company policy,Krup....in reality they want to make as much money out of YOU-Ho... :o as possible......

From the N/W web site... :D

Free services

We don't believe in charging you for everyday banking services like stopping a cheque, getting a duplicate statement or using our ATMs. There are only a small number of specialist services that you have to pay for, where we make sure the fee is among the lowest in the market.

We are the only high street provider that offers free card use abroad.

Competitors charge on average 3% commission fees; if you spent £400 overseas you would pay £12 extra in charges.

Over 843,000 cash machines worldwide

You can withdraw money from Nationwide, LINK or CIRRUS cash machines with no fees from Nationwide. :D

I think you'll find that no other UK bank will match the Nationwide on this one because the Nationwide actually loses money on it.

The issue is that Visa actually charges the Nationwide 1% on transactions outside Europe, and 0% within Europe (or the EU, not certain). - Nationwide charging customers 0% wherever they are means they're actually losing money on anyone in Thailand with Nationwide debit cards. (On Credit cards - there is the cash handling fee).

If only for this reason - I don't expect the Nationwide to continue doing this forever, although, as my brother said last year, they started advertising that they're cheaper than everyone else when abroad, so it might be a few years before it starts costing them too much to continue... (or visa gets rid of their 1% charge).
