A few of my friends have purchased condos in Bangkok, but not one of them would strongly recommend the lawyer that they used.

Many recent quotes from lawyers in Bangkok seem to be about the 40k to 50k mark, which seems expensive compared to the purchase price.

Can anyone recommend a good, fairly priced lawyer who is used to dealing with westerners?

It's a buyer's market,make them pay the fees.

Up country in Nong Khai i have never paid the lawyers fees as usually all fees ,including land tax are paid by the seller.

In Bangkok, B40,000 is reasonable. Too, when you buy thorugh a reputable agent, they will perform due diligence and assure a free title. There's no need to use the services of the site sponsor to do so.
