Ebook Readers

Featured Replies

As the title suggests, I'm in Pattaya and interested in having a look at ebook readers. Anyone know of a shop in Pattaya that stocks them. I've tried Tukcom and Central but get a blank look, or 'not in Thailand' response from most assistants.

If by ebook readers you mean eInk devices, they are not available here afaik. The subjects comes up quite regularly on this forum but it seems the only solution is to buy one, either from Amazon or B&N or one of the Chinese copies. Search for eInk devices on the internet. (EDIT: I just recall seeing someone offering Amazon Kindle devices on Thaivisa classified some time ago, but for an outragerous price, I think 12,000 if I remember correct - they're about $150 from Amazon, maybe $250 max incl shipping and taxes so probably not a very good idea)

You can read books on other tablets and smartphones with a big enough display to read. There is a place on 3rd floor of Tukcom that sells various Chinese Android tablets for 6K and up that may be usable for ebook reading. Personally I read a lot of books using the Aldiko bookreader app on my HTC Desire Android smartphone with a 4" screen, thats another option.

Yes you can have ereaders sent through both Amazon and B&N, but as Phil stated they add taxes and custom fees to the initial cost of the reader. I was able to order a Jetbook Lite reader through Newegg.com and it cost initially $99 and $30 for shipping and no custom fee. You should check this website for good info on ebook readers:http://www.mobileread.com/forums/.

Thanks for the info. I haven't even seen one yet so if they're not available in Thailand maybe I'll wait for a trip to the UK next year and buy one there.

Can anyone comment on those Chineese knockoff e readers?? like what formats to they play/read? and do they use e ink technology?? and price/reliability etc??

Sometimes China produces decent products.......

Finally got around to buying one, Sony Touch 650, and I have to say I'm delighted with it. Came from B&H Photo in the US and delivered within 4 days (including a weekend!) 7% tax added to pay on delivery but no customs duty and I gather electronic goods are zero rated so I don't think I just got lucky! A bit more expensive than the Kindles and other available devices but with the solid metal casing rather than plastic makes it well worth it to my mind.

Congratulations! and welcome to the club :)

My genuine (I hope) Sony 650 just imported from the US is made in China so I hope they can produce decent products!
