True Wireless Router Disconnects On A Regular Basis

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone else has this problem with a ZyXEL TRUE_P-660HW-T1_v2 router. The router disconnects around 5-6 times per day and reboots. I have upgraded the firmware.

I have 5 wireless devices and 2 LAN devices, and sometimes I do get a warning that there is an IP conflict. This does not happen often, maybe once a week, and does not correalte with the disconnections.

I also use VPN on one computer. I have the router security set as WPA-PSK.

Just wondering if the device is crap and if a new router would be any different, and if anyone had any issues with this or other True routers before I buy a new one.

thanks,

cottonmouth

What is your current firmware revision?

TRUE seems to have a FW update to 3.40 (BEC.4) http://support2.truecorp.co.th/detail.aspx?document_id=221

Zyxel has a FW upgrade to 3.40 (APR.5) C0 Link

Did this modem ever work for you? When it works are you happy with the performance? Can you see the line statistics?

When you say the router disconnects do you mean from the DSL network? Or your WiFi connection?

Maybe just try one wired device (w/o VPN) and see if you continue to get the disconnects, then add a WiFi device (again w/o VPN) and see if you get the disconnects. Finally, add a VPN with a WiFi device.

I Googled the Zyxel model no. and "disconnects" and saw quite a few reports. I wouldn't buy another modem until I had a handle on the issue, if only to make sure I wouldn't have the same issue with another router.

You often see the IP address conflict (your routers' DHCP server has handed out the same IP address to two devices, or a device is hard-coded to use a certain IP address which is already handed out to a device) with mobile devices that can hibernate or sleep. When they wake up they still have an 'old' address that has been re-allocated. You could just hard code all devices then remove those fro the DHCP range.

Hi ,

I have :

Host Name: ZyXEL Model Number: 1 Port WiFi MAC Address:

ZyNOS Firmware Version: V3.40(BGN.6) | 08/27/2009

Not sure if its the same model but I definitely have the same problem. The most irritating thing about it is that each time the modem resets [3-4 times a day] then the TRUE stupid firmware redirects you to True online . Its a pain in the a$. Otherwise, I'm very happy with True Internet though , I have consistently fast service from them.

The modem may be resetting on any current break [ Power in Bangkok not the 99.99999999999999999% uptime we westerners are used to :-) ] . I do not generally have issues with IP addresses as I disabled router function and use it as modem only [ I use my Apple Airport as mu router , far more reliable, give faster wireless and doesn't have conflicts like you mentioned].

I'm guessing all routers from True will have this annoying firmware mod so won't be changing,

Nope, not the same model, and I suspect an unrelated issue but can not be certain. Your issue sounds more like this one...?

Where I added this information:

It looks as though this is a known firmware issue with TRUE. If you are comfortable following these instructions maybe it would be a good idea to upgrade the firmware? Otherwise request a replacement modem from TRUE.

Look at the bottom of your unit to identify the hardware version of your unit.

There is also some newer firmware, direct from Zyxel here.

Not sure on True but ToT goes down regularly and every day - just shuts down so it may not be your router. ToT are horrible to deal with too as denial is standard unless you get a supervisor and request they reset their HSP settings - which they have done but never on a weekend.

Thank you for replying so quickly and apologies that I wasn't more responsive as you were helping me! I also wanted to respond for those who might also be having similar issues.

I had upgraded a few months back

Did this modem ever work for you? Yes

When it works are you happy with the performance? Sort of

Can you see the line statistics?

Is this it?

noise margin upstream: 21 db

output power downstream: 18 db

attenuation upstream: 5 db

tone tone tone

noise margin downstream: 6 db

output power upstream: 11 db

attenuation downstream: 23 db

When you say the router disconnects do you mean from the DSL network?

Yes

Or your WiFi connection?

Did and it continued to disconnect.

True did give me a new modem for free when I went into the office. Don't know if that is standard, perhaps just because farang couldn't speak Thai ;) It is however a 1 port Zyxel with no instructions that I have yet to have time to hookup. First attempt failed and I decide to wait until the weekend.

Based on the downstream noise margin figure of 6 db I'd say you have an issue with the line somewhere between your modem and TRUE's serving DSLAM. Have you contacted them to test the line?

This page should get you through the install procedure for the new modem, although it may be for a different model.

Can you post the upstream and downstream rates, in Kbps, which you see in the routers' management system?

Yeap, agree...the low downstream SNR indicates a physical line problem which could be outside or inside your residence.

Sure there is a bad noise margin... But I think there is one more problem. A bad noise margin does not cause the thing to reboot....

Do you use a UPS and is the modem connected to the UPS?

Maybe the UPS causes noise if you use one.... maybe the power is unstable if you don't?

There is the possibility your low SNR is being caused by the line or devices "inside" your residence. If you have any "unused" phone connection outlets there is a chance they could be causing signal reflections since they are unterminated. These signal reflections can lower/mess up your SNR. Do you have any type of phone/modem/DSL filter/etc type device you could plug into it and then retest/recheck your SNR. If the SNR goes higher (which is good) then you may want to look into seeing if you can disconnect that unused line from the source. Also make sure the wall phone line connector you are plugging your modem into is in good shape/clean/making good contact. Just do you best to check out your residence's phone wiring to the best of your ability.

Make sure you don't have your modem and separate router setting on top of each other...get a little spacing between the two. And if you got any other electronic devices real close to your modem trying moving them away to retest the SNR. In doing the retest, be sure to rerun/refresh the test to get a new SNR reading. Good luck.

YESSSSS! I couldn't agree with you more! That stupid landing page sucks! My devices/software require immediate access to the desired page, not some re-directed BS like that (which is in Thai so I can't read it anyway). I'm wondering if TRUE gets a kickback from Google each time they display their search bar. I wouldn't be surprised. Perhaps I can install the standard Zyxel firmware instead?

I do have to say, the TRUE techs have been very helpful. They have visited me several times and always call me back the next day for a follow-up. The Internet is pretty fast, too, but disconnects do happen and wouldn't be a problem for me if I didn't have that landing page problem.
