Students’ Brawl Alert Society Once Again

The recent incidences of a nine year old who was killed by a stray bullet and three high school students getting stabbed in one of Bangkok’s department stores just two days after has shed a brighter light on the issue of student violence.

Our reporter, Juarawee Kittisilpa explores what has spurred this growing epidemic.

Young, daring, and easily influenced – the stereotypical traits of what seems to be a promising young generations. But what if it was used negatively? Students get involved in street fights and violence.

For a number of decades, the amount of student killers has not dwindled despite the threats to cut down funds or close down the schools. In fact, it has been dangerously on the rise.

Numerous measures were imposed to deal with the issue, but none of them seems to be effective to curb the growing ruthlessness – from students as young as 15 years of age.

It is no doubt that our society has witnessed our fair share of violence and aggression. But can societal, political and economic instability be the cause of the ongoing rise in student violence?

Concern with the escalating matter, the Education Minister has called for meetings with various related bodies, including putting students from over 40 vocational schools in a camp.

Although the problem stems from the root of their families, parts of the society such as school institutions and committees have been trying hard to keep the students busy.

But it doesn’t seem to be the case.

What appears to be an act of trial and error is likely the proof of the ineffectiveness. Students are still finding new innovative ways to defend themselves and attack others.

Police Colonel Rattasak Rakslam, the chief of Minburi provincial police office, which has taken charge on the recent brawls case, believes that the percentage of the unruly students is only a minority.

Therefore, the society, including the majority of students, must join forces to help reduce violence and bring about positive morals.

However, police are now closely in coordination with the community and schools to ease down the issue.

The question is will this whole incident be, once again, a temporary wakeup call for official and the society? Will Thais have to ask themselves from time to time about what’s going on in the society, and only ‘just’ take notice of the saddened issues?

Hmmmm...the Battle Royale approach. Will this be a pay-per-view event? Does the winning school get a cash infusion from the Ministry as The Prize?

If you ask me, these kids have too much time on their hands, bad media influence such as on TV and video games, and lastly, absolutely NO role models to look up to in society. What a sad state to be in. Let's hope it doesn't escalate like in the U.S. system. God forbid should we ever need metal detectors in the schools here.

I grew up in a very ruff area of the States murders everyday and gang members on every corner. You didn’t have to travel fare to get shot just walking on the wrong side of town could earn you the privilege. Then something changed. The gang members selling crack on the street corners vanished in less than a year. So what happened? It simple two things came into play. One was the availability of inexpensive internet and the introduction of the Xbox (home video games). The kids simple need something to do. In less than a year the automatic fire we heard nightly from the park slowly faded into silence.

The police are not interested in arresting the attackers.

My son in law was recently attacked whilst coming to the aid of a friend. He ended up with 25 stitches in his neck and face from scalpel cuts. The police know who did it but were only interested in what share they would get of compensation money paid by the culprits family. It now seems that the family found it cheaper and the police more profitable to cut out the victim and do a deal with each other. TIT

Hate to say it, but we all know it.

"Welcome to the Western World, this is the price you pay" ermm.gif

This time you can't blame us. It came through your TVs.

This is nothing new to The societies since everything including government, police etc. is run by gang, or so called Families. This is early education to prepare them for the future. :o

I would have to concur. Sad but true. I have met a few Thai police here who are above reproach but they have said they cannot change what is not possible. They wish to serve out their time and hope to guide newcomers to the ranks but agreed, their mission is all but hopeless.
