Nathon Hospital

Recommended Posts

After 7 years when my wrist was broken and everything was fixed very professionally for 5027 Baht I decided today to visit them again as I had postponed a visit to a doctor too long and one foot especially one toe looked extremely ugly after the nail went off.Within total 3 hours of treatmens by many English speaking nurses, doctors and very little waiting time inbetween I lost the toe (my fault!) and had to pay 2690 Baht incl. blood test and medicines I have to bring with me for the next 10 appoinments. Nevertheless it was again a very good experience!

Yes I have also heard very good reports from several people re Nathon Hospital.

This could be because a lot of the Doctors and nurses there now have left The "Samui Bangkok rip off hospital" out of disgust at the present administration. :annoyed:

I know this for fact as these people (Drs. and Nurses) are customers of mine.

Now I understand why working and legally insured Thais can now even use the "r -o" hospital... Cannot imagine how high the bill would have been.

I agree. I too have heard nothing but good things about Nathon Hospital. Good service and a reasonable price. Over the years I have used it on occasions, and everything has gone well.

Thats very good to hear.

I have to say also that i hear nothing but good reports about the hospital in Nathon, although for a fairly nominal cost of 1200 baht a night i would reccomend getting a private room. Nice sea view, friends can bring you decent food and the care is just as good as the other hospitals.

One last blessing is that you won't have the experience of dealing with the Bangkok Samui Hospital administration dept because believe me they are rothless beyond belief. Mindyou, overcharging they extent they do i suppose you have to be.

Just by coincidence, One of my Thai customers came in yesterday after just coming back from the "r -o" hospital, consultation and 3 small packets of tablets....Wait for it.....

5365 Baht and that was with the 10% discount for locals. :shock1: Haaaaaaaaaaa. Bastards.

I had a friend who had a bike accident. He was taken to Bandon where they bandaged him up and X rayed the damage. The next day the bill for this was 38,000 baht. They also quoted him around 300,000 baht for the 2 operations to fix his ankle. We rustled up 30,000 baht and told them take it or leave it. They took it. I transferred him to Nathon where the surgeon who was going to do the operation at Bandon did the operations there and with operations, drugs, food and bed for a week the bill came to under 30,000 baht.

It also has the most amazing views with it being right on the beach. I used to go visit him and push him down to the beach and have a few beers and some food. It has to be the best time I've had visiting somebody in hospital :D

I wonder why people still use the others ? :o

I have to agree too, good service, & very efficient .... some people might get intimidated by the amount of people in the line up, but generally for blood tests etc one can expect to have done in less than 4 hours & leave with pills in hand! :D

They are good at calling out us Farangs by name.... & make sure you get your turn. (number system). If you can sit near the desk you will see when your number comes up anyway.

That used to take me two visits to doctor in the "west" plus then going to get blood pulled..... then wait at the pharmacy for up to an hour.... The pharmacy charge there was more than the whole visit here..... including doctor.

Monday is a day to avoid, if you can. Lines ups are longer.... you may need to come back after lunch hour which is 12 - 1pm....

When I had to stay in the Nanthon hospital for a week, I was offered a private room, but took semi private, (four beds) but only one other person in there at the time. Nurse to patient ratio was about five to one..... The bill at end of it all was very reasonable... including medications.

I think, definitely avoid the general ward ... that is a bit of a zoo! . if you need to be admitted.....

Jimmy Hi, I have to disagree with you on the general ward. My mate was really not looking forward to going there but after the first day he loved it. Everybody shared the food and drink etc and the other more mobile patients assisted him whenever he needed it. It does though look daunting at first :D

Each to their own Duncs but personally when visiting a mate in the general ward i found it an experience i'd rather avoid, hence i'd go for a private room.

What is great to hear is all the positive feedback about the medical care and hopefully more people will avoid feeding those parasites at Bangkok Samui rip off hospital.

seriously people if you had a major accident would you rather go to the so called r...o or the very nice, with good view, Nathon Hospital? i have known too many people who have died due to the lack of a hospital with the capabilities of bsh. for the small stuff i go to samui inter. but for a serious problem I think we are all lucky to have a facility like bsh regardless of it's admin.

But, if the surgeons are the same why not go to Nathon?? What facilities does BSH have which Nathon doesn't? I would really like to know!

they are not the same. lets be honest, comparing prices between a govt hospital and a private (for profit) hospital is like comparing apples and durian. most of the dr's who work at nathorn hosp have part time jobs, or private clinics because they do not earn enough money from their govt salary. Having said this Nathorn hospital is a good hospital and they are in the process of opening an international wing however they do not have a head trauma section for brain injuries, bsh does.

I had not been to Nanthon hospital for a while, thought it about time for a few check up's so did that this week. They have always were pretty efficient, but I think even more so now.... thumbsup.gif

On Monday, I had a blood test and Xray and saw two doctors within 4 hours... just over 500 baht (in all)

Today, another blood test and a specialist doctor plus my medication, 600 baht, all in less than 1.5 hours.... thumbsup.gif

But a whole lot of improvements have been made...since my last visit.... . Extremely efficient thumbsup.gif...... (Mr Obama should come take a look!, well.... maybe Romney....? )

Just a funny note, when I went to pay the bill and get my pills, the girl said "take a seat".... I asked her where I should take it too....biggrin.png of course she did not get that, but the Thai guy behind her, did, and explained it to her..... the whole office were all still laughing over that when I left.... cheesy.gif

I bet in future she will say to us farangs "sit down please"

A few weeks ago I went to one of the Private hospitals near Tesco, just to get a "phony " letter from a doctor for immigration, ( I forget now which hospital) but it took three people at the front desk, to understand a very simple request... blink.png I don't think I will go there again....

I am quite normal though... so long as I remember to take my pills! biggrin.png

As a matter of interest what is the number to call to be picked up by the nathon hospital ambulance if you were involved in an accident?

1669 is the direct line to samui rescue(ambulances are at different spots).

I have taken several people to Nathon Hospital with moderate injuries resulting in bleeding and the need for suturing (both accidents happened near Nathon). I also could recommend them for these types of situations. There seemed to be plenty of language assistance for non Thai speakers. For serious head trauma I would certainly want to get to BSH even though I share some of the other posters feelings about them

Cant fault Nathon hospital at all. Always great service and free with social security card. Well once a 50thb fee for a doctors certificate for work. Cant grumble at that.

I hope you arranged an extra week off for "beach time". biggrin.png

I can only add to the positive comments about Nathon Hospital. A while ago I had some heart issues and BSH wanted to put me in Intensive Care overnight for Baht 48,000 - it was already 2am! I asked if I was having a heart attack and they said no so I checked out Baht 4,500 later for what little they had done and first thing in the morning went to Nathon. After about an hour saw a very pleasant lady Doctor who looked at the paperwork from BSH and decided she would like to keep me in overnight just as a check up although she did not think there was anything serious. Took the Baht 1,000/night single room - sea view and as large as anything in BSH. multi channel tv. Downside (but being picky here) nothing in the bathroom, not even towels and the food was not good. However, Dr came to see me before she went home, had another ECG then and again in the morning. She came back about 9am and said there was nothing seriously wrong with me and discharged me with a bag full of pills - mostly vitamin and some blood thinners. Cost Baht 1,000 for the room. Nothing else. Yes I have a Social Security Card.

However I must add that the Heart Specialist at BSH Dr Ravi is excellent and is there Monday and Tuesday only. Even after the above a few months later I still thought I had a problem and he arranged a full stress test analysis at Bangkok Hospital in Bangkok - they do not have the equipment here. Only discovered a very minor problem and that cost around Baht 6-7,000 if I recall. So BSH is not all bad if you get the right Doctor.

If I were ill I would ask to be taken to Naton as I have only heard good reports from the place a Thai friend of mine who was ateacher before he retired has had his father in and out of the place for the last 3 years and they could not do more for him A falang nieghbour of mine had his appendix op at Bh he terlls me that the bill was just under 500.000 for his 7 day stay + op but he was insured I was amazed and rang the hospital to ask how much the same op would cost 1st question was have you insurance I told them no in that case sir it will be 50,000 for the op and 4/5 night stay I will let you make your own mind up but I think that insurance companies get ripped off big time that is why it is so expensive for the medical insurance cover.

Do they have good dentists there or can you recommend other place instead?

Thank you in advance

I asked about that and they did not seem keen to treat foreigners for dental work. I was told I would have to come very early (6am) and take a chance they could see me. Totally different approach to the excellent treatment I mentioned above. However there are so may private dentists here on the island and for most work not that expensive. Baht 1000 for a filling and Baht 500 to replace an old one that fell out.

I would not agree re Dr. T. A friend of mine on the island recommended him, and I instead of going to my regular place in Bangkok http://www.dc-one.com/ I tried out Dr. T. When I called [June 2013] they quoted me 800-900 baht for a cleaning but it turned out to be 1,800 baht! they added things like "consultation" etc. [Thus obviously, I recommend for any place (dental and hospital) that you confirm the fee again at the point of service.] I thought their cleaning was not nearly a thorough as dc-one, which for the 1,800 does a complete teeth scaling. Dr. T also make a couple sales pitches for A. shaving down my teeth to match each other, and 2. teeth whitening. The teeth whitening, using Opalescence at Dental Design is 7x what is cost to simply buy a package including custom trays from Amazon (in the U.S.).
