Featured Replies

Does anyone know a name for gps map software for thailand and BKK similar to Tom Tom software for the Pocket PC

Any links appreciated.

Thanks.

Are you talking about GPS Calibrated like Magic Map or to run off a GPS Device, and do all the mapping functions?

err.. I have a MIO 168 pocket pc with built in GPS receiver which I use with Tom Tom 5 navigator in the UK for point to point navigation.

I am looking for similar software for BKK. ie GPS knows where I am and I tell it to navigate to Soi 24 for example and it calculates the route and tells you to turn left right etc. until you get there gives eta etc.

Just like Tom Tom

Hi I'm in the same boat, I've been hunting for something like TomTom in Thailand. The best I've found so far is something called SmartMap but it aint special and its definitely no good for point to point navigation. I'll keep looking and let you know if I find anything.

I have just download PowerMap V7. It can run on various platforms, I am testing it on a Mitac Mio 338.

Download from Able ITS

Note. In Demo Mode the langauge is thai so unless you have thai on your PDA all you get are squares where the thai script shopuld go.

I emailed Able ITS and they sent me a PDF on instructions to change to english.

They also quoted me a price for the software and all maps covering Thailand - 5315 baht

Hi Mark,

I just downloaded the trial for PowerMap V7. The program works OK but it will only read the Thai demo map i.e. *.pm7, it will not read the english map i.e. *rar. Am I doing something wrong?

*rar means the file is compressed. You will have to first decompress it with a program like winrar or winzip.

The Power Map is probably the only map covering whole Thailand. There is another map (MapKing), unfortunately has map only for Bangkok. The Power Map has 15-day trial version. Later you can register (can do on line). The registration code will valid only for one PDA. But you can still change 2 times (in case you buy a new PDA). The ofcial price for Power Map V.7 is 4.800,- Baht. There is a new version G.10 and this cost 5.500,-. To change the menu to English: click left bottom “squares”, then the 5th line (top or bottom :o ), finally the 2nd from the top.

I run GPS on my UK purchased O2 XDA Mini S pda/phone. I purchased Garmin Que software and a GPS receiver from gadgetrend.com, they have a shop on Thong Lo.

The only problem is that you have to use the Garmin receiver (a GPS10) that comes with the Garmin software. I found that the Garmin receiver has real problems with the flyovers and tall buildings of BKK. I have a superior receiver, a Holux GPS 236, which uses a more up to date technology based on the Sirf iii chip but does not work with the Garmin software.

If you intend mainly using the unit in BKK I would advise against the GPS10 unit but I know that other all-in-one Garmin GPS units have the SIRF iii chip on board.

I have found a way around the problem by using a piece of software on my pda called gpsgate - http://franson.com/gpsgate/ - which allows my Holux GPS to communicate with my Garmin software. I now rarely loose satellite connection when in BKK.

pj123, agree with you. I also use the same combination (gpsgate + garmin que + other GPS). The GPS 10 is not my favorite to use with a PDA. Garmin has fantastic GPS receivers for car navigation (nuvi series) or outdoors (GPS MAP 60 series), but the Bluetooth :o , oh well... :D

Mapking makes a gps map for BKK that runs on pocket pc

You can purchase from Pocketgear.com, go to the website and do a search for Bangkok and this will show up

<h1 class="title">MapKing3D Bangkok English Version 7</h1>

works real good, gives turn by turn info, its $40

You can go to MBK or Panthip Plaza and get it for few hundred baht.

I am using iGO 8 http://www.igomyway.eu/ on my PDA here in Thailand. I used Garmin with ESRI map for 2 years, but then switched to iGO.

Most maps for iGO are made by Teleatlas and are exactly the same what you can see in Google Maps.

The ESRI map has slightly more details on the Thailand map compared to Teleatlas, but the iGO software is much more fun than Garmin.

Cheers,

George

Hi , Igo software for PDA with Thailand map is available as a free download. I am using it on my MIO A 501. I downloaded from Rapidshare, there are lot of free downloadsites . You should look for IGO 8.3 , this is the lastest version. runs on WM5 and 6.

It all comes down to how much you are willing to pay. I got a "Garmin Nuvo 270" while in the 'states' and bought a separate SD card for Asia. I ended up with the entire North America, Europe, and South East Asia. Punch in an address and it gives instructions on how to get there. Has all kinds of extras that come with it. Better than expected. The card cost $150US and I got the Garmin for free for signing up for a credit card I don't even use.

ok... Mapking - is essentially the same as Powermap - they just have different suffix...

i think the powermap is .pv7 or something similar.

and mapking is .mk5 or something similar.

there is a cracked version available somewhere, i found one ages ago on a speciality site, but i don't know where - it was a massive hunt through google...

the garmin maps do cover all of thailand and are undoubtedly the best - trust me, i've run both at the same time on occasion.

I've seen a windows mobile running Garmin Mobile XT - which you can use with non-garmin receivers, you just have to get it unlocked...

The powermap is ok, and if it will run its pretty good, but the garmin is better. Garmin i think is more reliable for the mapping, like sometimes powemap thinks there is a turn and there isn't, and i tried to route the powermap from pakkret to abac bangna and the powermap initially refused, but as i got a bit closer it was ok. there must have been a weird spot on the map or something.

i used garmin mobile xt on my nokia n95 to go all the way to phuket and back so i can vouch for it... and even upcountry it seemed to get the roads right (even on little roads) and i quite enjoy just driving randomly up country and seeing odd bits of country and then getting found again using GPS when i've got well and truly lost.

so my advice would be to ring the local garmin distributor and see what they can do for you.

fileshunt.com/rapidshare.php?file=igo+8+3+thailand+map+09+2008 , this link has some free igo software.I was going to post the link I used, but the download I used has been removed from the server ?

have garmin mobile xt on two phones

one runs the ersi map and one with the excellent rotweiler maps

have had no issues with either of them and the xt software is very easy to use
