Hickory man is found guilty in opium smuggling case

Plea deal results in 46-month prison sentence

HICKORY, USA: -- A man police accused of receiving 10 pounds of opium from Thailand was sentenced last month in federal court and will serve almost four years in prison.

Chiew Cham Saevang, 34, of Twentieth Avenue Drive, NE, pleaded guilty March 10 in Charlotte to charges of conspiracy to distribute opium and importing opium and aiding and abetting. As part of a plea agreement, Saevang received two 46-month prison terms, to be served concurrently, said a deputy clerk in the U.S. District Court.

Saevang also received two years of supervised release and must pay a $100 fee.

Saevang was arrested on June 9, 2004, when police said he and another suspect, Sue Her, accepted a package from Thailand containing 10 pounds of the narcotic. The opium was concealed in porcelain figurines and boxes.

Officials with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Los Angeles intercepted the parcel and notified Hickory police, who delivered the package undercover to his address.

Saevang faced up to 18 years on the two charges.

Only 4 years for 10 pounds of the stuff.

That is less than a year per kilo!!!

Yes, but he has already been sentenced to a life-time of stupidity!

Something tells me he must have squealed like a stuck hog to get such a light sentence!

I'm betting he'll be watching his "six" real close for the next 46 months.......
