Need A Good Ent Dr., Have Vertigo, Dizziness, Any Reccomendation?

Hey everyone, I hope some of you may be able to offer me a recommendation or point me in the right direction.

I am in the States right now but do not have health insurance at the moment being self employed, I can afford to pay out of pocket to a point...will not get far here, so I want to try and get some help when I am back in BKK in a a few weeks.

I woke up last Sunday night with sweats, the room spinning and then about 12 hours of throwing up. I chalk this up to food poisoning but I am not sure. This is the third time in about 5 years I have experienced this. The last episode was about 2 1/2 years ago.

My problem is I am experiencing severe vertigo, well it starts severe, and then tapers off...I get a little better each day, now nearly 7 days after I am much better but still nowhere near 100%. Last time this happened in 2008 I went to a doctor after I was well enought to get out of bed and they said it may not have been food poisoning but a viral infection. I was prescribed Meclazine 25mg to help with the dizziness. Three nights ago I did see an ER doc here in the US who said I need to see and ear, nose and throat doc to find out what is going on...and rule out Meniers disease.

This doc also prescribed Meclazine 25mg 3x day and it has little to no effect, it just seems it takes time to clear up. My thinking is a little "hazy" and if I move my head quickly in any direction I tend to lose my positional awareness and balance. The first couple days after being able to get out of bed I walked around like I was drunk!

Finally, in this episode, during the last few days I have also experienced very minor Tinnitus in my left ear and a numbness in my face, mainly around my mouth and lips.

I am an otherwise healthy 35 yo male.

Can you guys give me any suggestions as to who I might seek out in BKK to figure out what is going on with me? Any ideas what I might be experiencing? Any help is greatly appreciated...am a bit worried about this and it is surely no fun trying to work and get things done being a dizzy fog all day!!

THANKS!!

Dr. Saowaros at Bumrungrad is an expert in vertigo and an excellent doctor. The only problem with her is that she is extremely popular and does not take appointments. You can go to the ENT department at 7:00 am and register to see her on that day. The staff will advise what number you are and contact you when you should return.

See this thread

Go to google and look up BPPV symptoms........I had the same problem as you are experiencing and after seeing a couple of doctors I found a neurologist who recognized the symptoms and treated me for them. I have since met two other people experiencing the same symptoms and I sent them to see the same doctor (Bangkok Phuket Hospital) and they have also been alleviated. Hope this helps....

Doing some more research online it seems my experience and symptoms seem to match what is known as Labyrinthitis. Does anyone here have any experience with this or known anyone who has had it?

I've experieced bouts of vertigo/diziness for many, many years. Not often, though. They last from a couple hours to a day. Painless but uncomfortable. During that time I dare not drive or ride my motorcycle. I don't even like to go out. One time I got out of bed and promptly crashed on the floor because of it. From a few documentaries I've seen on TV it's due to some small debris inside (inside! not because the ear is dirty! cannot be cleaned!) the auricular canals that get dislodged at times and impede the proper equilibrium functions of the ear. No infection or virus in my case so it's not really labyrinthitis. Maybe I can trace the onset of this trouble to an ear blockage/infection I got years ago and that went untreated for some time. Haven't had it for some time now.

Hi,

I am 36 and had the same thing earlier this year.

Was benign positional vertigo or BPPV - an inner ear problem, that they think was caused by a knock to the head.

Was really bad at first (and was working on a ship - excruciating) and then a month of it coming and going, couldn't drive when I got ashore.

A doctor mate got me in to see a specialist in Aus but only got an initial consult that cost 4500B, and would have had to schedule more trests for weeks later to fully diagnose and treat. He said it was classic BPPV though.

I emailed Samitivej and they got me an appointment for the day I arrived in Bangkok (3 days later).

They have quite a few ENT doctors.

I saw Dr. Yongyuth Wasinwong.

First they checked all my basics, and also my hearing (or maybe they did that in Aus - was fine anyway, even though I would often hear thigns that weren't really there).

He did some reactive tests and kinda shoock my head around and gave me some exercises to do twice a day, and it went away. No drugs. I also had an MRI to check my brain, which they did then and there too (this was optional - my health insurance covered it).

I just emailed the hospital on [email protected]

The doctor was 1350B, and well worth it.

Good luck,

redfish
