Sanan could be a possible PM, Boonjong says

By The Nation on Sunday

Deputy Interior Minister Boonjong Wongtrairat yesterday came out in support of Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kachornprasart as a candidate for the premiership.

"It is possible that Sanan will rise to the PM's post as he is politically qualified and highly respected by political parties,'' Boonjong said.

The comment came after reports that Boonjong's Bhum Jai Thai Party would change camps by teaming up with the Pheu Thai Party to form a government led by Sanan.

However, Boonjong said Chart Thai Pattana Party chief adviser Sanan was not keen to accept the PM's post though he went to talk to some party leaders to get their opinion on helping the country end its bitter political divide.

He denied media reports that Bhum Jai Thai Party was lobbying Somkid Jatusripitak - a former deputy PM in the Thaksin Shinawatra government - to head the party in the next election.

Democrat Party spokesman Buranat Samutrak downplayed the Sanan reports, saying there was no reason to discuss the possibility because all the coalition parties still supported the Abhisit government.

Chart Thai Pattana Party adviser Somsak Prissanananthakul said he checked the Sanan report with Chat Thai Pattana chief adviser Banharn Silapa-archa, who was "shocked" to hear such news. "The Chart Thai Pattana and other coalition parties have not thought about changing political camps and we still work together to solve the country's problems."

He said Chart Thai Pattana spokesman Watchara Kannikar gave a personal opinion in support of Sanan, which was not the party's stance.

Responding to moves by Bhum Jai Thai to push for an amnesty law, Somsak said all political parties didn't necessarily agree on legislative moves, so it could not be regarded as a conflict solely in the coalition government.

Asked to respond to the possibility of a new coalition if the Democrat Party was dissolved, Somsak said the issue was too far away and his party would rather wait for the court verdict before making decisions.

Meanwhile, Sanan said he would talk with former-PM Thaksin to negotiate with the People's Alliance for Democracy in a final attempt to achieve national reconciliation - an effort he initiated without any political party involvement and without a motive to grab the PM's post.

"I thank the Chart Thai Pattana for their support but I will not accept the PM's post. I am doing all this for the country to achieve peace," he said.

The coalition parties are operating on the assumption the Democrats' executives will get banned when the current cases are concluded, by no means a certain conclusion.

I see Jatupon has announced that if Pheua Thai win the next election, they will give,(with Thaksin's agreement), 10 million baht to the family of every red shirt who died in the April, May protests.

How much will they give to the families of the soldiers killed and the vendors and staff who lost their jobs and businesses and earnings during the reds occupation of Ratchraprasong?

If this was election season we could accuse k. Jatuporn of unlawful promises and hidden vote-buying. As for the non-red-shirt losses, he probably doesn't think that matters an iota, those wouldn't vote for him anyway. Talk about double standards :annoyed:
